It is hard to get away from the claims of VALSHEDA, who was progressive over fences last season, and makes his seasonal return in a very winnable race. He won a four-runner handicap at Ffos Las on his final start, but the end result didn’t come close to reflecting his level of superiority, and he is a horse to keep on the right side this season returning from just 4 lb higher. Rolling Dylan and Step Back both have good records at this track and can perhaps give the selection most to do.
KANSAS DU BERLAIS showed plenty to work on when finishing fourth in a listed event for newcomers at Auteuil on his sole start for David Cottin in September and has since joined a yard that do well with such types. Gary Moore has won this event twice in recent years, including with Goshen in 2019, and Kansas du Berlais won’t have to improve much on his debut form to play a leading role. Non Stop, who made a successful start in this sphere at Warwick a month ago, looks a feasible danger and Planet Legend is the pick of the hurdling debutants.
MILAN BRIDGE developed into a fairly useful performer over hurdles, winning three of his five starts, but he is very much in the mould of a chaser, and is expected to go on to even better things in this sphere. His intended debut in this sphere turned into a walkover and he looks very interesting from this sort of mark now tackling fences sporting a first-time tongue tie. That said, Gloire d’Athon is thriving over fences and he’s expected to play a big part.
MAXIMILIAN won his sole start in points and has won all of his starts under Rules, too, proving himself a useful prospect when defying a penalty in a valuable event at Bangor last month. That form isn’t the easiest to assess, but the manner in which he drew clear between the final two flights suggests he is capable of better yet, and the level of his form sets the standard in this Grade 2. He is expected to come out on top again, likely at the main expense of Man At Work, who created a good impression when winning at Aintree and is also open to progress.
CORRIGEEN ROCK made no mistake on his second chase start at Kelso in October and, given he’s only a five-yearold, he has the potential to rate much higher ever fences as time passes, so he’s a very appealing candidate for a stable that’s had its fair share of success at the big southern tracks. Casa Tall has dropped to a handy mark and could show the benefit of a considerate reappearance, while it would be unwise to dismiss High Up In The Air, too.

Smart Flat performer RAYMOND TUSK didn’t meet expectations when tried over hurdles last winter, but he may do better now handicapping on his return to this sphere and his opening mark looks a fair one based on the pick of his Flat form. Hugos New Horse got the job done at Wincanton despite still showing signs of greenness so should have more to offer, while Sadler’s Bay and Galahad Threepwood also remain with potential in an open race.
