17:45 – Vindolanda

Trinity Girl and Blow Your Own Horn are the only two course and distance winners in the field. The first named has been in cracking form this season, and her always prominent second in a previous round of the Racing League in August entitles her to go close here.

However, I think that the handicapper may just have her measure and dropping back in trip, the Charlie Hills’ trained charge Vindolanda is the each-way call. Listed company at Chester was a shade too hot last time out, but on his previous second over 14 furlongs at Wolverhampton he has solid claims particularly as a return to a stiff mile and a half around here could suit him better. The hat-trick seeking Sarsons Risk is respected following two strong staying victories last month.

18:15 – Angels Landing

There is plenty of pace on in this extended 1m 2f contest and that should suit this hold-up filly who needs an end-to-end gallop over this kind of trip. In a moderately run race, the daughter of Fascinating Rock did well to finish within a neck of the winner Persist who got first run on her.

That was her first run in class three company, but this is quite obviously more of a test in a race with greater strength in depth, but Angels Landing’s each-way price more than compensates for that fact. I suspect she will be able to take a nice step forward here, as she must do to be placed let alone win, but granted the anticipated truly run race, she gets the nod over likely market leaders Andaleep and Tregony.

18:45 – Menai Bridge

Young Fire ran a solid race over seven furlongs here just under a year ago off a mark of 94 and gets the chance to race off 88 here after two flat performances at York and back here over the course and distance last time out, in arguably a better event. Still, he looks dangerous in this slightly easier class and is feared along with Galiac who ran well in that same Gosforth Park event when a closing second to Menai Bridge.

But in a hugely difficult race to dissect the nod goes to Menai Bridge. t has taken Charlie Hills a while to ascertain that a mile is his trip and despite being 1lb worse off with Galiac and 4lbs worse off with the third home that day, Bringitonboris, there is more improvement to come from the top weight over the mile.

19:15 – Eagleway

Second in a Victoria Cup off 88 and a winner off 87 at Southwell last year, Eagleway has been given some tough tasks by connections in the past 12 months. The last time we saw him came in the International Handicap at Ascot at the back end of July when he was drawn away from the action on ground that would have been way too quick for him.

Set to race off 87 here and with a high draw to boot in this lower grade, this six-year-old has an excellent chance of making it three from 16 on the sand. Of his 14 rivals, bottom weight and course and distance winner Desert Land along with Out From Under both have solid claims.

19:45 – Rock Of England

Six of this 14 runner juvenile field are having only thee fourth start of their careers and are therefore open to any amount of improvement. The Ed Bethell charge is the one that could well be open to a stack of improvement having found a valuable class two nursery handicap at the York Ebor meeting too hot to handle. I suspect that the seventh furlong that day was his undoing, but his keen running antics also didn’t help and a faster pace back at six furlongs may help Rock of England to settle better.

The Kessaar colt, Yacowlef, finished just off the places in the Convivial Maiden Stakes a day later at the Knavesmire and is bound to come on for that experienced. He is the biggest danger to the selection ahead of the more experienced outsider Expeditious.

20:15 – Strike Red / Sterling Knight

There are five three-year-olds set to take on the nine older horses in this six furlong handicap and this is normally the time of year that the youngsters, maturing fast, can be relied upon to make their mark in all-aged races.

The best of the classic generation could well be Sterling Knight, not disgraced in a better race at Ascot behind Adaay In Asia and nicely drawn in stall 13 to boot, he could well be worth a saver.

However, winner of this race last year off a 3lbs lower mark, Richard Fahey’s charge Strike Red could well be the value call. His last two runs at Hamilton and over this course and distance suggest he is coming to hand and he is taken to give weight away all round.

20:45 – Muker

I thought that the frustrating Stone of Destiny was given a moderate ride by Harry Davies last week at Doncaster. He historically cannot see any daylight until as late as possible, but was put in the firing line way too early by his young jockey.

That run should ensure he goes off at a price here and his run at Goodwood behind Many A Star when he ran into trouble (which seems to go with his style of racing) suggests he retains the majority of his ability. Still, the percentage call is to oppose him – despite a plummeting handicap mark – and it may be about the right time to have an each-way poke on Muker.

He won on his debut here in June 2020 and subsequent novice win at York and then a close up second in a Group Three in Ireland he has been embroiled in a fight against the handicapper off a career high mark of 103 at one stage. Eight races later, including a fair third to Alligator Ally at Thirsk, his handicap mark has fallen to a mere 81. From stall 14, if Cam Hardie can get him hidden in the pack, his turn of foot could prove crucial in the closing stages.
