13:30 Goodwood – Ascot Adventure

This is perhaps the most obvious suggestions of the day’s four selections, but as a young and lightly raced charge on the up I have him on my recent shortlist to keep him on the right side while conditions (juice in the ground) remain in his favour. Although he only prevailed by a half a length from Asad at Haydock Park last time out, the selection was well on top at the finish that afternoon. I suspect that the son of soft ground sire Mayson remains well treated off just a 5lbs higher mark and could make his mark in Listed class in the near future. In a field of nine there are some well handicapped rivals up against him that would be dangerous granted a return to form.

The one I am particularly worried about, and may well have a saver on, is Robjon (dropped from 95 to 86 this term). He seems to be a horse without a trip with six furlongs looking too sharp for him, but on several occasions finding a seventh furlong too far. The key to his chance is being able to settle under the impressive Rossa Ryan to preserve his turn of foot on a track which should play to his strengths.

15:15 Goodwood – Mellow Magic

This staying event looks quite competitive for the class three level. When looking at the card at this famous track it is worth bearing in mind that the are is forecast to have some rain, up to 5mm, which is sure to turn the going to the soft side of good at the very best.

That could play into the hands of this hugely consistent bay filly who not only acts with plenty of give in the ground, but also has a good record at the track with form figures of 22. That latest second came behind that good dual purpose horse Aggagio and the handicapper has been very fair in raising her just the 2lbs in the ratings. There are several in here that warrant plenty of respect, perhaps none more so than Mick Channon’s Single who has been given a real chance by the handicapper now that she is down to a mark of just 74 having been placed off 76 in October and should be ready to peak here after looking in need of the run on her seasonal debut at York two weeks ago. The veteran Dance To Paris made a pleasing comeback at Chester, but may not want too much rain to fall.

16:16 Musselburgh – Leodis Dream

Another Sunday Series card bringing some fantastic prize money to mid class rated entries at mainly class four level. The sprint track at the Edinburgh course requires plenty of luck in the run and a good draw to boot which the selection seems to have. In this field of 10 speedsters, half of the runners are course and distance winners with the light weight Rory arguably the best of them following a last gasp win at Hamilton Park at the back end of May. But the Paul Midgley trained charge looks arguably the best value bet of the day now that he has been given a real chance by the assessor here.

Rated as high as 92 in the not too distant past, the selection has been given some tough tasks by his handler since then, but had a run of races where he was either badly drawn and/or didn’t have the luck in the run. However, he served notice last time out in class three event at Catterick that he has regained his spark and looks capable of winning off this perch. Racing with plenty of zest that day at the Bridge, the six-year-old flew from the traps and led until in between the two and one furlong marker. That second run of the season should have put an edge on him and from a good draw in stall nine he may be able to grab the all important stands’ side rail and make the best of his way home under Harry Russell.

17:45 Musselburgh – Morag McCullagh

This Listed contest is arguably the most interesting race on this Sunday Series card live on ITV4 with several lightly raced horses set to be rated a deal higher by the back end of the season. I have particular respect for Improvised who has been absolutely crying out for a step back up to a seventh furlong after being badly outpaced over the shorter trip on three of her last four starts. An inside box in stall number five is also a plus for this beautifully bred daughter of Raven’s Pass as is the likelihood of the ground staying on the fast side of good. She could represent the biggest danger to my pick who we have yet to see the very best of with just the three career runs to date. Two of those have come as a three-year-old, a win in a novice at Kempton (second has cemented the form since) and then a hugely unlucky close-up third to Tipper Toes in a Listed affair at Chelmsford, both races over six furlongs. With the dam’s sire being Daylami this extra 220 yards looks made to measure for this bay filly and granted a better passage this time around it will be a big surprise if she can’t take another step forward here.
