13:15 – Persian Force
The obvious one is PERSIAN FORCE, who was by far the most expensive of these at the sales and is a brother to last year’s Weatherbys Super Sprint winner Gubbass from the same stable. Beach Breeze, who hails from a yard that won this back-to-back in 2015/16, and Blatant, who represents last year’s winning stable, are other likely types.

13:50 – Diligent Harry
DILIGENT HARRY had underfoot conditions as a plausible excuse on his final start at Ascot last year, yet his profile prior to that was an upwardly mobile one and he gets the nod to make a winning return and he’s still very much unexposed on turf. The chief threat may emerge in the shape of Garrus, with last year’s Ayr Gold Cup winner Bielsa completing the shortlist.
14:25 – A Boy Named Ivy
A number arrive with claims, including Michael Dods’ A BOY NAMED IVY. A winner on return at Redcar last spring, he produced a host of solid efforts in defeat thereafter and, having fallen back to his last winning mark, it would come as no surprise to see him primed for another big run. Empirestateofmind progressed nicely in handicaps last term and is feared. General Lee and Mostawaa complete the shortlist.
15:00 – Chindit
A small field but an interesting race. CHINDIT brings some really smart form to the table and has a good record fresh so he’s the pick. Roger Varian has won this 3 times since 2016 and the unexposed Royal Champion has the potential for better in 2022, while lightly-raced 5-y-o Boosala achieved enough in handicaps at the end of 2021 to think he could also make his presence felt at listed level.
15:35 – Modern News
MODERN NEWS teed himself up perfectly for this when a promising third at Meydan and, with the step up to 1m a big plus and promising 7 lb apprentice Harry Davies also in the saddle, this lightly-raced course winner can add to Charlie Appleby’s fine recent record in this event. Fellow improvers Mujtaba and Saleymm seem sure to have a say, while David O’Meara’s duo Darkness and Hortzadar both rate as lively outsiders in a cracking Lincoln.

16:10 – Groundbreaker
Andrew Balding saddled Bangkok to win this maiden in 2019 and his representative GROUNDBREAKER, who showed plenty in two starts at Kempton towards the end of last year, is very much the one to beat. Newcomers do not have a good record in this race (only one first-time-out winner since 2006), but General Idea and Almuhit both make plenty of appeal on paper, particularly the former, and rate the main dangers.
16:46 – Sandyman
With the Michael Appleby yard in good form, SANDYMAN is worth chancing in this wide-open handicap. He was runner-up off a 6 lb higher mark back from a break at Nottingham in October and a reproduction of that would surely see him go close in a race of this nature. Be Fair has acquitted himself well on the all-weather the last twice and he is second choice ahead of Nick Vedder and Al Qaasim.

17:16 – Mitigator
The vote goes to MITIGATOR, who opened his account for this yard upped to 11f at Kempton last time and, still unexposed beyond 1m and raised just 3 lb, this 6-y-o may have more to offer. Dynakite’s two victories this year have been followed by below-par efforts, but it could be that he needs more time between races and a bold show could be on the cards here. Carter Cowboy also enters calculations, along with Gold Standard.
