13:50 The Grand Visir
THE GRAND VISIR is a smart stayer on the Flat, and has plenty of scope off his opening mark in this sphere based on that ability. There is reason to think he hasn’t shown all he has to offer over hurdles yet and gets the vote in a competitive opener with that in mind. Uno Mas and Asserted are two possible dangers from the Christian Williams yard.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
14:25 Black Op
Several in with a chance but it could pay to side with BLACK OP. Tom George’s charge was unable to make a splash in graded events last season but, having showed up well for a long way in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on his penultimate start, he’s taken to make his first go in a veterans’ chase a winning one. Last year’s winner Minellacelebration rates as the main danger, ahead of Captain Chaos.
15:00 Tamaroc Du Mathan
A competitive renewal despite the relatively small field and the vote is in favour of the Paul Nicholls-trained TAMAROC DU MATHAN. He was clearly not himself when last seen at Ayr in the spring, but he had previously looked one to keep firmly onside, landing the Grade 2 Pendil at Kempton in February.
He represents a yard in flying form at present. Grade 1 winning novice Allmankind shaped well in a pipe-opener over hurdles recently and is also expected to go well with that run under his belt.
15:35 Gelino Bello
The market will prove highly informative. But, GELINO BELLO, who brings useful bumper form to the table, might be the way to go. The ones with experience don’t set an exacting standard, so he gets the nod at the chief expense of fellow hurdling debutant Doctor Ken for the in-form Olly Murphy team. Dan Skelton took this contest 12 months ago and his Lakota Warrior is another well worth considering on the back of a wind operation.
16:10 Pounding Poet
POUNDING POET takes a step up in grade, but he could hardly have been more impressive when supplementing his breakthrough Southwell success at Warwick in May, beating a next-time-out winner with something in hand. An 8lbs rise shouldn’t prevent a bold bid to complete the hat-trick for his in-form yard on his return from a break. Mackelduff, a winner himself at Southwell in the spring, is interesting now handicapping.
16:45 Corach Rambler
CORACH RAMBLER looked a dour stayer when making it two from three over hurdles at Carlisle earlier in the year and there was definite promise to glean from his reappearance on chase debut over a trip which is short of his optimum at Perth last month. The return to further rates a plus and he’s fancied build on that initial promise now. Chase-debutant Morning Spirit is feared though, along with Thegallantway.
17:20 Lady Excalibur
Plenty of powerful bumper yards on show in this. Alan Jones does well with the ammunition he has and LADY EXCALIBUR, a six-figure yearling bred for the Flat, is just about the most persuasive option of those with racecourse experience.
She failed to follow up at Uttoxeter last time but remains with potential, and this sharp track should play to her strengths. Ma Belle Noire could be a different proposition this time, with Blue Suede Shoes and Sorceress Medea interesting newcomers.
