Goodwood fourth LIBRA TIGER looks the pick of the runners with experience but is only a tentative selection as he’s taking on several interesting newcomers, notably Ave Maria, Hebrides, Ingra Tor and Virtuoso in that order of preference. The betting should help to firm up expectations.
The market needs monitoring with the newcomers in mind, Lionel and Lysander in particular making some appeal on pedigree, but CRESTA DE VEGA shaped with enough promise on his debut to suggest he can win a race like this en route to better things. Nottingham fourth Zain Nights is second choice.
There’s not that much to separate those who have run but TYING THE KNOT might just prove the best equipped for this test, with Bushfire second on the list. Newcomers Balgowan, Postmark and VE Day are from powerful yards and need a close look.
The top two on the shortlist are KALEIDOSCOPIC and Atavique who were successful on this day 12 months ago, the former at Doncaster and the latter on this card. Kaleidoscopic is back on that last winning mark and gets the verdict. Third choice is Strawberri, ahead of Skytree. Market support for seasonal debutante Lady Percival should be heeded.
Secret Shadow is not passed over at all lightly, so great was the authority of her soft-ground win over 1m6f last time. However, DOWNSMAN also goes very well in the mud and he may be able to ground out another win, with this step up in trip likely to help with further improvement. Crema Inglesa has had a cracking season and looked a highly realistic candidate for longer trips when she stayed on into second over 1m4f at Newmarket last time.
Provided the ground stays deep, CARIBOU and Molls Memory would be very interesting as they remain unbeaten on heavy going. The former is the less exposed of the pair, while the latter has won this race for the last two years. Third choice is consistent Irish filly Pretty Rebel, ahead of Milltown Star. Motorious looks a major contender if proving as effective back on turf, while handicap debutant Old Flame also has to be feared.
The Irish raider Fastar, who revels in the mud, is tempting after a break, but preference is for BERNARDO O’REILLY (nap), who had an excuse in the Ayr Bronze Cup having shaped well on his previous two outings. Topweight Capote’s Dream is much respected, while Uncle Jumbo is well handicapped if the blinkers have a positive effect.
Single has a cracking chance on the ratings following her excellent fourth when 80-1 in a Listed race last week but her 2-30 strike-rate and the prospect of much softer ground today give enough encouragement to the doubters. FLAMMARION, almost at the other end of the weights, has not proved his stamina on the Flat but he has soft-ground form on the Flat, a bumper win on heavy ground and a hurdles win last time out all to boost his case. Tin Fandango is in fine form in the mud and looks the chief danger, followed by Weardiditallgorong.
