Southwell 17:15 Buniann
Has built himself an impressive all-weather profile at other venues without stepping foot onto the exclusive fibresand at Southwell yet. He is generally held up for a late rattle which makes me slightly concerned at this venue. However he is drawn close to the wing in stall number two (so won’t get much kick back) and I’m sure they will decide to push forward or at least try and sit handy on this track. It’s interesting after three successes elsewhere, the team decide to send him here.
Dundalk 17:30 Dark Magic
This old boy he’s not shy of going to the winners enclosure, but he does have a little bit of a knack of finishing second on the all-weather as happened last time. However, he is only having his third run for the new stable and he obviously retains all of his ability. He has been punted on numerous occasions previously and surprisingly went off at 40/1 last time, he won’t be anything like that sort of price this time but we have a big positive jockey switch with the champ Colin Keane taking over.
Dundalk 19:00 Shabaaby
Could end up being a very shrewd purchase for this quality outfit of John Levins. Was originally a 270,000 guineas as a yearling and has been picked up this time around for 16,000 guineas.
He’s was rated up in triple digits for some time and finds himself perched on 97 now – some 12lbs below his peak. Undoubtedly he seemed to lose his way and has obviously not been the easiest to train, he looked a little bit reluctant in the headgear last time at Doncaster, he is talented and he’s in the right hands.
Southwell 19:15 Sharrabang
Certainly deserves to get another victory on the board as. he has been very unlucky on two of his last three starts by bumping into sprinters in redhot form, Forget the last effort as it was stretching his stamina over the mile and he reverts back to his optimum distance and is well positioned from close to the inside to sit in a handy position, our rider is good value for her 3lb allowance and he can gain an overdue return to the winners circle.
Dundalk 19:30 Dark Kris
Another one who has been picked up from the horses in training sales for a tiny percentage of his original 200,000 guineas cost. He’s not over-raced and with such a good pedigree, you would be hopeful that the new team can unlock some further improvement.
The sprinting distance of 6f is a slight concern but his reappearance run after quite an absence for this yard, was very encouraging. He should be at concert pitch now three weeks after that run and could easily step into the Fundalk winners enclosure.
Southwell 19:45 Magnificia
Has surprisingly dropped down 9lb in the handicap despite not running badly and was right on the tail of some in-form runners last time. However, the handicapper saw fit to reduce her rating to a mere 51.
She is no superstar but has been found a very decent opportunity. The young lad on top, Rowan Scott, is a bonus as I’m sure he is still buzzing after his excellent placed effort over in the Breeders’ Cup aboard Ubettabelieveit.
This is down in bargain basement company, but a win is a win!
