Liverpool v Crystal Palace
Premier League match at Anfield
TV: Sky Sports, Sunday, 2pm

Both teams to score

Liverpool compounded a poor result at Old Trafford last Sunday by suffering a shock 3-0 home defeat against Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Another setback against Crystal Palace on Sunday would threaten to completely unravel their season as it approaches the business end.

Liverpool are red-hot favourites to avoid a slip up, but there is a good chance they will have to score at least twice to do so.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now gone eight games in all competitions without keeping a clean sheet, and they also conceded in each of their last eight home league games, a run stretching back to before Christmas.

Liverpool have also fallen behind in four of those eight games, while Burnley and Sheffield United made them sweat by levelling matters.

There is a sense that injuries are starting to catch up with Liverpool, but they should get the job done against Palace on Sunday. They just might have to endure a few nervy moments before doing so.

Darwin Nunez to have five or more shots

Darwin Nunez’s finishing deficiencies may also be catching up on Liverpool, with the Uruguayan striker passing up several opportunities in their 2-2 draw at Old Trafford last Sunday.

He will almost certainly get several opportunities again on Sunday as Crystal Palace come to town.

Nunez averages 3.4 shots per game – the third-most in the league behind Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah – and there is every chance he will attempt a number of shots on Sunday, with Palace almost certain to sit in and try and hit Liverpool on the counter attack.

Over 4.5 Cards

Liverpool may have endured a difficult week, but they are by no means out of the title race.

Palace, on the other hand, may be in 14th, but they are only five points clear of the relegation zone and are not out of the relegation dogfight just yet. All signs point to a tense affair at Anfield on Sunday and there is a good chance several cards will be issued.

Crystal Palace boast the third-best disciplinary record in the league, picking up 55 bookings and one sending off in 31 games, while Liverpool’s record of 54 bookings and five red cards leaves them in 10th in the league’s card table.

Palace have averaged two cards per game in their last six outings, however, and there is a chance they are beginning to feel the end-of-season pressure. They have taken just six points from their last nine games and need to start putting points on the board in their last seven fixtures of the season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have averaged two cards per game in their last six home league games and are undoubtedly starting to feel the strain of challenging on three fronts. There could be a flurry of cards at Anfield on Sunday.

Crystal Palace to commit 12 or more fouls

Liverpool will control the ball on Sunday, that much is certain. Klopp’s side have enjoyed an average of 60.7% possession in the league this season, the fourth-highest in the top-flight.

Palace’s average, on the other hand, stands at just 40.7% and is the fifth-lowest in the league. Oliver Glasner will almost certainly set his side up to defend deep and hit quickly on the counter attack, which will likely translate into a high number of niggly fouls.

Palace rank third in the division in terms of fouls committed per game, averaging 12.2 fouls per 90 minutes. They could easily match that average at Anfield.

Liverpool over 8.5 corners

Not only will Liverpool dominate possession, but they will also pepper the Palace goal with shots.

The Reds average the highest number of shots in the league, at 20.3 per game, and they could reach that figure on Sunday, if recent home trends are anything to go by.

In seven home league games in 2024 – in games they have often fallen behind in – Liverpool have attempted a whopping 194 shots at an average of over 27 per game. They have also registered 74 shots on target in that spell, an average of over 10 per game.

That high volume of shots directly translates into a high volume of corners, with Liverpool averaging over nine per game in home league games in 2024. Klopp’s side will lay siege to the Palace goal, especially if they fall behind, as they have done so often in recent months.
