With the club season over, and Man City having completed the treble, we now shift our focus back to the international game. The first semi-final of the Nations League sees Netherlands play host to Croatia. With both sides keen to come away with some sort of silverware after coming up short at the World Cup, this should be a scintillating affair. Believe it or not, these sides have only ever met twice, resulting in a win for the Netherlands in 2008 (3-0) and a win for Croatia in 1998 (2-1).
Croatia to Win
Croatia really are the stronger side in this affair defensively and I would confidently say that they also win the battle in the middle of the park, too. With the creativity that Luka Modric still possesses, partnered with Mateo Kovacic who appears to be on the verge of a move away from Chelsea, there’s going to be plenty of service given to their men up front. The Netherlands have failed to convince me of their ability as a team of late. They were lacklustre in the World Cup and, with a number of players that one would hold question marks over, I’ll take Croatia to Win.
Under 2.5 Goals
The last two meetings between these sides have seen exactly three goals each. Granted, both meetings were a long time ago, and the game of football has come a long way in the time since. Netherlands have seen Over 2.5 Goals in all but two of their last six fixtures, but have not come up against a side with the defensive capabilities that Croatia possess with Borna Sosa, Josko Gvardiol and one of only three goalkeepers ever to get a perfect rating from L’Equipe for his heroics against Brazil in Dominik Livakovic. This could be attritional so it’s Under 2.5 Goals.

Wout Weghorst to Have 1 or More Shots On Target
Wout Weghorst has had, well… a forgettable second-half of the season after being brought in by Manchester United on loan in order to bring some major big man energy to the Theatre of Dreams. Unfortunately, he has struggled to make the sizeable impact that it was hoped and he rounded out the campaign contributing virtually nothing (one goal and one assist) in his time with the Red Devils.
However, he always pull its out of the bag with the Netherlands – nobody can forget his heroics against Argentina, even if it was short lived. I fancy Weghorst to Have 1 or More Shots On Target.
