Hungary v England

Nations League, Saturday, 5pm

Live on Channel 4, All4

After a gruelling season in which some clubs played as many as 63 matches, what could be better for England than four games in 11 days in a competition many people still don’t understand?

In the next two weeks, Gareth Southgate’s side face Nations League matches in Hungary and Germany, before returning home to host Italy and the Hungarians. They then play twice more in September, hoping to top their group so they can take part in the finals next June when their players will be even more tired than they are now, thanks to the mid-season World Cup on the horizon.

England are among the favourites to go all the way in this competition which is somewhat unusual in light of them being the third seeds in this group. If they are to go all the way, a pair of wins against Hungary will be essential.

Handicap Betting: England to win -1

Marco Rossi’s side have been one team who have certainly benefitted from the creation of the Nations League. They were in its third tier for the inaugural edition but back-to-back promotions has seen them join the big boys for this campaign.

And while they won’t be in Qatar for the World Cup at the end of the year, Hungary were the only team to take points from England at Wembley in qualification, drawing 1-1 there last October.

However, Southgate’s boys won 4-0 in Budapest the previous month and though that game was goalless until the 55th minute, the final score line should be similar here.

Across the two recent meetings, the Three Lions had 10 clear-cut chances so could easily have scored more than the five goals they trousered. They also racked up eight shots on target on their previous visit to the Puskas Arena so assuming they do similar on Saturday evening, England should comfortably better the handicap of -1 to win by at least two.

Over 3.5 goals

Whether in Hungary or not, the English have been rattling in the goals in 2021/22. Granted, they bagged five against Andorra and Albania and hit San Marino for double figures but in their nine matches this season they have scored 35 times while only conceding three at the other end.

A ‘no’ bet in the Both Teams To Score market would certainly make a lot of sense, and don’t let me stop you. The odds are better in the totals goal markets though, so we’ll focus there instead.

There have been at least three goals in nine of England’s last 12 matches, and four-or-more in six of them.

Although one of the exceptions was the home game against Hungary, it also would’ve seen several goals had the finishing at Wembley not been so wasteful. There should be over 3.5 goals here so pop that on your Bet Builder.

Home total corners: Under 2.5

There rarely seems to be many corners in international football, or certainly not in England’s matches at least. Their nine games this season have averaged just 6.9 and none of them have seen more than 10.

While the average is a touch higher if we look further back, only two of their 21 matches since the start of last year have paid out on over 10.5 corners.

With the Three Lions certain to dominate, it’s not unfeasible that they could spoil a low corner bet so instead we’ll focus on Hungary. They had none the last time they hosted England and only two in the reverse fixture so we’ll take the under 2.5 corners on them.

Anytime Assist: Phil Foden

With four fixtures in under two weeks, Southgate will have to manage his squad through their testing schedule. As such, it’s hard to be certain about who will be in his starting XI for this one.

But Phil Foden looks to be as close to a certainty as we’re going to get. Only Harry Kane has started more England matches this season, and the Manchester City man was injured for their first three games in 2021/22 else he would’ve probably been top of the pile.

And despite making just five international starts this term, he has four assists, the most of any of the Three Lions. With England likely to be in the goals, Foden can pick up an assist for one of them.
