Isn’t it weird that Rebecca Black wrote a song about how great Friday is, despite the fact it’s the only day of the week that usually doesn’t feature any big-time football? Honestly, Rebecca, it’s like you’ve never discovered the joy of switching between the highs of European football in capital cities all over the continent to the ball being booted in the air non-stop for two straight minutes in Rotherham.

But luckily, we’re not one-hit wonders. Not one bit of it. Instead, we focus our attention on landing midweek funds courtesy of Karim Benzema and ehh – Ollie McBurnie. It’s a weird combo, but much like the saying, it’s equally wonderful.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

So, combining the Champions League action with a small-to-medium city tour of England’s less glamorous parts courtesy of the second tier in the football pyramid seems as good a pastime as any.

At least if you’re not in the right frame of mind to ask the same person for Netflix recommendations again. And who are we to say which is better? One man’s… Actually, enough cliches. Here’s your midweek acca.

19:45: Sheffield United v Millwall – Sheff United to Win

I’ve two things I really trust in life. My local chippie and home teams who are underachieving in midweek games against average opposition. Millwall are the epitome of consistency in the most average fashion you could imagine. They’re midway in the league table and have both and conceded 11 goals in 11 games. Roy of the Rovers stuff.

Sheffield United have lost their last two games in the league, but more importantly, lost both of their last two games away from home. Bramall Lane is a different proposition and it’s no easy trip on a Tuesday evening for a football club who, stereotypically, need the advantage of playing on their own turf.

20:00: Shakhtar Donetsk v Real Madrid – Real Madrid to Win

It’s not that I’m advocating a certainty or anything, but I do think there’s a touch of value in this play. Madrid have been in flux for a while, but their path to a La Liga title should be slightly easier now – Luis Suarez is getting older and Barcelona are managed by Ronald Koeman.

The lack of frustration that normally comes in Madrid when they’re second-best isn’t present this year. They’re top of La Liga, although winless their last two. This recipe is what you want. A team who aren’t sulking but who aren’t resting on their laurels. Not to mention Karim Benzema has been the best player in Europe so far this year.

20:00: Ajax v Borussia Dortmund – Borussia Dortmund to Win

This is priced up incorrectly. The fear of Ajax is surely based on name and name only – or off the idea that they resemble their early-season selves. They hit five past Sporting in Lisbon before putting Benfica to the sword in their home game. They scored 17 times in their three league games before the latter too.

But since then, they’ve been beaten by Utrecht in pretty comfortable fashion. Dortmund have scored 19 times in their opening 17 league games and Erling Haaland is the type of player to settle close ties away from home in Europe’s elite competition. Ajax don’t have that edge.

20:00: Atletico Madrid v Liverpool – Liverpool to Win

I’m over the denial of Liverpool as a European superpower. Yes, I understand that their only true irreplaceable players are probably Mo Salah and Trent, but as a unit, they seem to have developed a knack of winning games from dire situations.

You saw that against Milan. They probably deserved to lose, but ultimately came up trumps. Atleti are averaging about a goal and a half in the league, and that win over Barcelona certainly flatters. They’re not at Liverpool’s level.
