When Newcastle made the decision to bring in Steve Bruce, we knew things were about to get very… well… Newcastle-y. Not only does the man know every corner of that city and where to get booze after the pubs let out on a Saturday night, but he was also always going to impose his personality on the club – which is, in truth, just a massive reflection of himself.
He’s not really achieved anything in his managerial career, but he has shown brilliant moments, people stick by him regardless of his failures – and above all else – he’s a truly loveable fella. All of this translates into an extension of Newcastle being as inefficient as they were under Alan Shearer, but we can’t take our eyes off it.
Up next for them is Wolves – who became the first team to make Leeds look somewhat ordinary this year. And I don’t mean that they weren’t coughing up chances, it’s just that you always felt Leeds were destined to lose that one. Wolves will do that to you – and their transition from overachievers to now being a truer image of their constituent parts is likely going to cause frustration. So, what happens here then? Steve Bruce’s Newcastle are a funny one. It’s kind of like the shrewdie in your local shop taking over a club and actually deciding to carry out that old theory of only trying in games you think you’ll probably win. I don’t think Newcastle even tried a tap against United last week, and given they scored in that game, it should tell you all you need to know about Manchester United in 2020.
But, the point remains – when they’re on it, they’re on it. Do enough to satisfy your boss and you’ll be fine. That goes for both the playing squad, and Bruce – as Mike Ashley probably smells either a sharp increase in TV money coming in, or a payoff when the big clubs leave for the continent.
They’ll fancy they can win this though, so you know they’ll try. Wolves? Well, they very rarely fire a blank at home so, Both Teams To Score is a safe position.
Wolves to Come From Behind and Draw
Newcastle, with all that built-up energy from their stroll in the park last week, will fire straight out of the gate while Wolves are still seeing visions of Marcelo Bielsa’s sessions fly past them as their energy levels are sapping. I like this Wolves to Come From Behind and Draw bet a lot because it reinforces two certainties in life: Newcastle not ever putting a game to bed, and a home side coming away from a game they should have won with just a point, and somehow not feeling too bad about it because of the fashion it occurred in.
