Northern Ireland World Cup bets refunded after referee finally admits error over penalty

It took him long enough…

After Northern Ireland’s World Cup play-off referee admitted his game-deciding penalty decision was wrong, Paddy Power have refunded punters who backed the team to reach Russia 2018.

Ovidiu Hategan controversially penalised Corry Evans for handball in the first leg against Switzerland, despite clearly connecting with the midfielder’s shoulder.

The Romanian has today admitted his error – prompting us to refund all single bets on Michael O’Neill’s men qualifying for the World Cup, amounting to thousands of pounds in stakes.

Such is our annoyance at the admission, we’ve also refunded stakes on all pre-match singles for both the first and second legs as well!

Asked about the controversy spokesman Paddy Power said: “The referee’s admission is refreshing but, ultimately, doesn’t make much difference to disappointed fans.

“We decided to give the punters some justice, too, by refunding those who backed Northern Ireland to qualify for Russia.”

* Refunds of a free bet apply to the following: Any single bets placed pre-match for the 1st leg of Northern Ireland v Switzerland. Any single bets placed pre-match for the 2nd leg and any single bets placed on the Northern Ireland ‘To Qualify for World Cup 2018’ market. No max bet.
