Super Bowl teams: How did Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers reach Super Bowl 2024?

It's a long road to Paradise...

Super Bowl 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but how did both teams get there?

The Chiefs lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 2023 and were expected to compete for it again. Meanwhile, the 49ers’ exceptional performance over the regular season put them in pole position for a place in the big game.

The star quarterback and tight end duo of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were always going to put the Chiefs in a great position. As for San Francisco, it was their first season since 2016 without quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who joined the Las Vegas Raiders.

His surprising replacement Brock Purdy has a story of his own. He was the final draft pick in 2022 and in his rookie season became a huge star. He has guided his team to a division title and led the league in multiple passing categories.

Sunday’s game is a rematch of the Super Bowl in 2020 when a late Chiefs comeback, led by Mahomes, saw them win their first championship in 50 years. The 49ers are five-time winners but last lifted the famous trophy in 1994, coming second on two occasions in 2012 and 2019.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs came into the 2023/24 season as defending champions and had expectations of becoming the first team since 2004 to win back-to-back Super Bowls.

Despite not being the top seed heading into the playoffs, they became division champions for the eighth consecutive season.

They lost just six of their 18 in the schedule, including a match against the Buffalo Bills, who they went on to defeat in the divisional play-off round last month.

The Chiefs completed their road to the big game with a victory away to top-seed Baltimore Ravens in the Conference Championship game.

Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 Buffalo Bills

Kansas City Chiefs 17-10 Baltimore Ravens

San Francisco 49ers

At the beginning of the season, the 49ers went on a five-game winning streak before eventually losing to the Cleveland Browns.

They’ve been seen as one of the teams to watch all season and became the first to clinch a playoff spot in week 14 after a win over rivals Seattle Seahawks and a defeat for the Green Bay Packers.

They became the NFC West champions for the second consecutive time and went into the postseason as the number one seed in the NFC, something they hadn’t achieved since 2019.

The 49ers’ impressive record across the season has made them the team to beat on paper which makes for an interesting battle on Sunday.

Detroit Lions 31-34 San Francisco 49ers
