Sunday 11.30pm: Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers
NFC Title Game

I know we’ve gone and hyped up the Wild Card round the fact that it’s the first ring of playoff games.

I also understand that we’ve taken to hyperbole to describe how amazing it is to welcome the #1 seeds in the Divisional Rounds.

But this weekend, teams are actually battling out for Conference Championships.

Yes, an actual trophy.

While Kansas City and Baltimore battle it out in the AFC, the NFC title picture takes centre stage for us here and Kyle Shanahan’s ‘nearly boys’ face off against the story of the season.

No, that’s not Taylor Swift – it’s the Detroit Lions coached by Dan Campbell who is the human anthesis of everything the popstar represents.

Except the entertainment factor. My god, do they ever have that in common.

But these teams are coming from very different backgrounds. One franchise has been heralded as one of the best-ever and possesses a rich history.

The other is a rags to riches story.

You find this reflected in the spread and the moneyline, but time and time again, the Lions have proven they’re built slightly differently.

Do we dare take them to beat San Francisco?

Detroit +7.5

Here is the only reason this spread exists:

Their legacies to date, and the fact San Francisco blow opponents out, or they don’t win. So having four points in a spread wouldn’t help.

However, there is a trope that Kyle Shanahan freezes when it comes to the big moments- and this was on full display as the Niners barely scraped past a defense in Green Bay who actually fired their coordinator.

This one is going to be close, especially as Dan Campbell will use the analytical edge when it comes to fourth downs.

Sam LaPorta to Score Anytime

The Niners know how to defend space. Their linebackers – Warner and Greenlaw – will not be beaten on leverage over the middle, but when they go into man coverage, they might struggle with the route-running of one Samuel LaPorta.

Ben Johnson frequently flexes the tight end out wide and gives them an advantage using his unique skillset.

He’s therefore the most likely touchdown scorer in this game at a reasonable price.

Jared Goff – Under 255.5 Passing Yards

The Detroit Lions are going to run the ball down the throats of San Francisco, and that’s primarily to offset their furious pass rush.

Goff’s biggest issue is his lack of movement in the pocket and this is how Johnson likely offsets it; that and quick releases.

Both typically result in a lower passing yards tally come the end of the day.

Christian McCaffrey – Over 34.5 Receiving Yards

So, Detroit generally pick their poison when it comes to these moments, and while draft pick Jack Campbell has played well, he’s generally more brawn than he is raw athleticism.

This means that while he can potentially keep an eye on Kittle’s crossing routes, he probably won’t be able to deal with the underneath stuff as well when CMC emerges on wheel routes and checkdowns.

George Kittle – Under 61.5 Receiving Yards

The above blurb obviously ties into this, too.

While Kittle is a massive playmaker against undersized linebacker/safety combinations, Detroit don’t struggle in this capacity – so he’s used as a decoy for this gameplan.
