Friday 1.15am: Chicago Bears @ Washington Commanders
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action

Over 44.5 Points

The Washington Commanders’ defense is one of those units that, every year, people hype up – and then every year, it fails to impress. Everyone was so excited about their interior defensive line. Then teams stopped running the ball against them.

Everyone was so excited about Kam Curl, because he was better than his draft stock. Now everyone’s excited about Emmanuel Forbes because he went higher in the draft than people envisaged.

So if your idea is that Justin Fields won’t be able to move the ball, you’re sadly mistaken, just like the Total Points line-setters. We’ll kick off with Over 44.5 Points.

Chicago Bears (+5.5)

The Bears really did move the ball well last week. As much as there was a collapse, they’re just in transition and not used to winning.

They’re going to begin by losing close games like we saw last week, and even though Denver is a large asterisk in the league right now because they look anemic on defense, there is enough to suggest that with designed runs, Chicago could be difficult to stop going forward. I’ll take the Bears (+5.5) next.

Chicago Bears First Half Handicap (+3.5)

And their best friend right now is the game scripting. For all that the Bears fans’ anger is directed at their quarterback, he is clearly able to execute a pre-rehearsed drive to near-perfection.

It’s as the game progresses, his opponent gets to counter and adjust to Chicago’s plan, that they get lost. But that’s a second quarter problem. I fancy Chicago Bears First Half Handicap (+3.5)

Washington Commanders Second Half Handicap (-2.5)

It’s here where the issue will lie, ultimately. There are just better skill position players at receiver for the Commanders – they haven’t shone just yet, but this feels like a get-right game, doesn’t it?

Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson do not face corners who can take them out of the game on Thursday. When opposing defenses go conservative, these two receivers excel. And the Bears will almost certainly look to preserve a lead rather than attack. As such, Washington Commanders Second Half Handicap (-3.5) looks a bet.

Khalil Herbert Under 45.5 Rushing Yards

Khalil Herbert’s exposure last week was a flash in the pan. He’s been getting lots of work but given Denver play high safeties, leaving space to run into, he was always going to have some success against them.

The key selling points of Washington is their defensive interior, meaning he’ll be used more in the passing game, or in typically inefficient moments when they’re trying to kill clock. Khalil Herbert Under 45.5 Rushing Yards closes us out.
