Harbour Lake meets the selection on 4 lb better terms and shouldn’t be far away again, with Lord Snootie and Gowel Road others to note in a fiercely-competitive event which has seen double-figure-priced winners in six of the last seven renewals.

SUNNY STREET, a half-brother to Path of Thunder who showed his best form around this trip on quick ground, seemed to shirk the issue when splitting a pair of subsequent winners on his handicap bow at Southwell but he’s clearly well handicapped so is worth another chance back from a break. Top-weight Cerulean Bay should come on from his decent return at Beverley and, despite some concerns over the ground, is next best ahead of the unexposed Winterfair who needs to settle better if he is to win this competitive three-year-old handicap.

Top-weight JUSTCALLMEPETE has been given a chance by the handicapper and became a Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ after his last outing, as he didn’t get the best of runs at Newbury last time. He gets the nod ahead of Beauty Choice, who seems to handle any ground. Brighton specialist Liangel Hope and the well-handicapped Zozimus rate the principal dangers, though a return to this C&D should suit Red Maids on her return to action.
15:15 Ballee
Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ BALLEE did really well to stick at it for as long as he did having helped contribute to an overly-strong gallop at Aintree a month ago, and at the forecast prices, he looks the way to go. Lark In The Mornin will do for many on the back of his ready Boodles win but the juice in his price has gone, while Rare Middleton may well be able to reverse last month’s Cheltenham form with Tintintin despite only having a 1 lb swing in the weights. Tapley ran with credit in that same race and it’s worth noting that lightly-weighted runners have fared well in this, landing four of the last five renewals.
15:50 Poet Master
Four-year-olds have won two of the last three renewals and the vote here goes to Karl Burke’s POET MASTER who arrives on an upward curve so is fancied to take this step up into listed company in his stride and make it 5-6 on the back of his ready Newmarket handicap victory. Shartash made the perfect start with Archie Watson when scoring at Thirsk on his return and – effective on any ground – rates the main danger, although in-form duo Witch Hunter and Pogo also command plenty of respect in a race that the market often gets correct.
16:25 Doctor Midas
With the yard in better form than for some time, DOCTOR MIDAS gets the nod. He represents top connections and may be clued up enough to make a successful start at the possible expense of Letterston Lily, who showed ability in a much better race than this at Aintree on debut and her stable won this race 12 months ago. Sayva, a half-brother to the dual bumper winner/useful hurdler Saylavee, is another notable newcomer, while Don Cantillon does well in this sphere so any market support for Step Ahead should be noted.
17:00 Cambria Legend
Having seemed to appreciate the step up in trip last month, CAMBRIA LEGEND perhaps should have gone even closer still on his yard debut at Yarmouth last time and James Fanshawe’s gelding is fancied to one better at the chief expense of Minstrel Knight, who promises to be suited by this longer trip. Rich Harry held his form well last season and can come on for his seasonal return to finish third at the main expense of Yippee who has been gelded since his Wolverhampton defeat in January.
