13:50 Sandown – Maasai Mara (each-way)

If he was with bigger connections I’m not sure MAASAI MARA would be quite the price he is. He’s been second in a couple of novice hurdles and won the other in good style at Catterick. Trainer John O’Shea spent £100k on him and that’s usually the type of money he spends at the sales. He’s a four-year-old so gets the weight-for-age allowance and looks like a good each-way play.

14:05 Leicester – Raadobarg

George Boughey’s RAADOBARG didn’t run too badly in the Spring Cup last week when seventh, but he’s a lot happier with soft or heavy in the going description. He can gain quick compensation now for AMO Racing.

14:25 Sandown – The Real Whacker

This contest tends to go to a classy performer and looks like a good opportunity for THE REAL WHACKER to get back on track. He jumped well in a first-time visor in the Cheltenham Gold Cup where he just didn’t see the 3m 2f out. If he’s bounced out in front and gets into a nice rhythm he should love the test that Sandown offers. He has a big chance of regaining the winning thread.

14:45 Haydock – Zip (each-way)

Gavin Cromwell’s Irish raider Earls heads the market and has a right chance on the handicap ratings after his Curragh run the last time. I’ve some reservations about the track for him as he comes late and needs the gaps. ZIP has winning form on soft and heavy ground and makes plenty of each-way appeal. He’s a former course winner who has run over the Winter on the all-weather and was fourth on Turf at Doncaster a month ago.

15:00 Sandown – Jonbon

It’s easy to draw a line through El Fabiolo’s mishap at Cheltenham, but he still does have that chink in his armour with his jumping. The longer he stays up in this contest, the better his chance. Edwardstone will take them along at a good clip and make it a true test. JONBON surprised me with his determination to win at Aintree and has always gone well at Sandown – and won this contest last year from Captain Guinness. I’ve not been his biggest fan but this race could set up nicely for him.

15:35 Sandown – Le Milos

A really good spectacle and it looks like Dan Skelton has targeted LE MILOS at this contest. It was clear he wasn’t going for the Aintree Grand National after a mid-season mishap and ended up a single-digit figure for the Pertemps Final, where it looked like he still needed the run.

He faded out at the end and I suspect this is as close to the plan as you can get, given his interrupted season. He’s rated 7lb higher over fences than hurdles but given he won the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury in 2022 over this trip, this looks an obvious end-of-season target now.
