Matt Chapman’s ITV Racing Tips

Kempton 13:50 – Givemenfive
Newcastle 14:08 – The Galloping Bear
Kempton 14:27 – Blow Your Wad
Southwell 14:45 – Clarendon House
Kempton 15:00 – Lump Sum
Kempton 15:37 – Cap Du Nord (each-way)
Southwell 15:20 – Military Order

Kempton 13:50 – Givemefive

ITV Saturday gets under way here at Kempton and this blog will be hoping for a better day than we had this time last week! Coverage starts with the Grade 2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle over 2m. Really frustrating there are not eight runners here for eachway betting. Plenty here with potential and while Kalif du Berlais is an obvious winner he did jump left here on debut suggesting he might be better going left-handed and he’s a big chasing type for the future. Getting 5lb I’m happy to chance GIVEMEFIVE who impressed for Harry Derham at Warwick last time. Soft ground will be no issue and the former moderate Flat performer has taken really well to hurdling. He’ll probably try and make all and could be hard to catch under Paul O’Brien.

Newcastle 14:08 – The Galloping Bear

The ITV cameras also got to Newcastle Saturday for this Eider Handicap Chase over an extended 4m1f. Not many of these could dream of being in the Grand National which tells you much about the class of the event this time around. At the age of 11 it’s hard to be strong on THE GALLLOPING BEAR who was second last year off the same mark of 140. That said, the old boy stays well and goes in mud so he does have every chance of reaching a place if producing his best for Ben Clarke and Joe Anderson, who takes off a useful 5lb. Of course my hope was once the winner of a big prize at Haydock before being disqualified for a banned substance and he deserves a prize of this nature in his career.

Kempoton 14:27 – Blow Your Wad

Another Grade 2 in the Pendil Novices’ Chase over an extended 2m4f. Some talented horses here just trying to take themselves to the next level. BLOW YOUR WAD could never get his act together at Cheltenham last time but prior to that he was good here at Kempton as well as at Sandown and Chepstow. He stays well and there should be a good gallop to run at here. A rating of 140 puts him bang in the mix for Stan Sheppard and Tom Lacey.

Southwell 14:45 – Clarendon House

Some flat action Saturday on ITV including this Listed Hever Sprint over 5f. On all we know CLARENDON HOUSE should take this for Robert Cowell and Luke Morris. Rated 112 he has 7lb in hand of big rival Diligent Harry as he gets 3lb from that rival and the Meydan run last time was a fine effort.

Kempton 15:00 – Lump Sum

Here’s the Grade 2 Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle over 2m. Not much between the leading contenders. LUMP SUM won well at Wincanton at a short price and then gave leading Supreme hope Jeriko du Reponet a right race at Doncaster. The latter might not have been at his best that day but this slightly shorter trip will suit Lump Sun and he looks promising for Sam Twiston-Davies and Sam Thomas.

Kempton 15:37 – Cap Du Nord (each-way)

The big betting handicap chase of the day over 3m. Flegmatik did this column a right favour last time and could easily go in again if in the same mood. He loves this place. I’m not giving up on another horse who loves this track, CAP DU NORD, who runs for Christian Williams and Tristan Durrell who takes off 3lb. My hope is out the handicap so carries more than he should, indeed he’s off 126 rather than the 122 he was beaten off at Doncaster last time and is actually down to 118. But I still believe he retains ability – he showed something at Donny – and I’ll have a few quid each-way.

Southwell 15:20 – Military Order

The Group 3 Winter Derby over 1m3f. Lord North hasn’t gone this far before and I’ll chance MILITARY ORDER who is a horse I love but he’s not coming up to scratch. The once Derby 9-2 shot was seen off by Enemy last time at this track but he acted on the course well enough to suggest he can still do some damage in a race like this for Charlie Appleby. Danny Tudhope takes the ride.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
