Horse Racing tips: Fran Berry’s Friday night flutters at Dundalk

After a winning NAP last week with Celtic Revival (10/3), Fran Berry's back with his Friday night fancies and he likes the look of The Highway Rat in the 17:30.

17:00 – Eruption (each-way)

A 5f handicap for those rated 47-65 and a lot of battle-hardened campaigners line up. The veteran Geological is still trying to win races at 11-years-old but this trip will catch him out. Eglish should be winning races throughout the campaign but is perhaps best watched tonight over this trip while Havana Notion is talented but has been done no favours by the draw. The one that appeals most is Matt Smith’s Eruption, who has shown good form at Down Royal and Bellewstown but bombed out last time on soft ground. He could be well handicapped and with a decent draw, good ground and ability to handle running around a bend, he’s a smart pick.

17:30 – The Highway Rat (NAP)

A 5f Stakes race where Big Gossey brings in the highest rating of 109, 7lbs clear of The Highway Rat who won this race last year. He looks the one to beat again for me as Big Gossey looks vulnerable and hasn’t run at Dundalk in a long time and comes here after a decent season on the turf. It’s a decent contest with course specialist Harry’s Bar also in the mix, but he hasn’t looked as sharp as he once was and I wouldn’t discount Aidan O’Brien’s Hispanic either.

18:00 – Alabama

A cracking two-year-old contest again over 5f where Royal Ascot winner Valiant Force is clear on ratings off 108. He drops down in grade having finished fifth to Vandeek in a Group 1 at Deauville in August and we saw that Simon Crisford inmate run away with the Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket last week. The 7lbs penalty is a concern for Valiant Force though and there are others worth noting too in Chandigah and Pipsy. However, Alabama can improve again for his win here last time and could be a bit of value for Aidan O’Brien and Seamus Heffernan.

18:30 – King Of Gosford

A two-year-old Nursery Handicap over the long sprint of 7f where Masonbrook Meadow and The Bear Trap are joint top weights in this 14-runner race. King of Gosford and Interestnpenalties dead-heated for fourth at Down Royal in a race that’s working out well. King of Gosford ran in a better grade Nursery at the Curragh last time and wasn’t disgraced in seventh so should benefit from running around a bend and can make the best of his way home.

19:00 – Rising Sign

Another 7f contest for two-year-olds where Kairyu is the top-rated for Micheal O’Callaghan off a rating of 102 but there are stacks of winners in the field. She’s been sold for big money and her form is good over 6f, but I’m not sure this trip will suit as much from stall 12, under a 3lb penalty. Keep an eye on how King of Gosford and Interestnpenalties run in the previous race as Battle Cry was three lengths ahead of them when second in that Down Royal contest, before going on to win at York and is the pace angle from stall four. His stablemate Mountain Bear drops in class but has a tough draw in stall 15. However, the untapped potential could rest with Ger Lyons’ Frankel filly Rising Sign who was well backed on debut at Punchestown when winning cosily. She could be a potential superstar in the making.

19:30 – Jack Red Cloud (each-way)

A 7f maiden where Jessica Harrington’s One Boss heads the ratings off a mark of 71, 1lb clear of Quick Blessing of Gavin Cromwell. Baalbec Beauty has a squeak as does Local Girl but Andy Oliver’s Jack Red Cloud made an eye-catching debut before bombing out at Punchestown. He possibly didn’t handle the track and it looked the same story at Down Royal. His dam did win a handicap at Dundalk and I’ll take a punt on the breeding angle bringing out the best of him on this surface. He’s the pick.

    20:00 – Sheyya (each-way)

A three-year-old plus handicap over 7f where the veterans Dandyville and Ransom head the weights on 92 where the top four rated are previous course winners. Hightimeyouwon should enjoy the return to Dundalk but Johnny Murtagh’s Sheyya showed more promise at Cork when finishing off the race really well, eating up the ground late on. She could be well handicapped, has a good draw in stall three and Wesley Joyce takes off a handy 7lbs also.

    20:30 – Time To Boogie (each-way)

We end the night with a 1m 2f handicap with Emeric chasing his fourth win in five starts while Jabbar is going for a hat-trick of wins. Ger Lyons has declared Caulaincourt, Great Cat Mau and Banana Three. Aidan O’Brien saddles Time To Boogie who could be a handicap blot off a rating of 74 over track and trip and looks to have the potential to be a massive improver in this grade.
