The Irish are heading Down Under in a bid to land one of the world’s richest races – the Grade 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
It’s a pretty big deal in Australia as locals brand it ‘the race that stops the nation’ and the likes of Absurde, Tower Of London and Vauban are set to make the long trip from Ireland for the two-mile handicap.
Australian-trained Gold Trip came out on top in last year’s renewal, which boasted an $8,000,000 prize pot, and the six-year-old is in contention to defend his crown, despite flopping at the top level in his most recent outings.
