13:15 Ayr – Isla Kai
A busy ITV Saturday gets under way with a handicap over 1m. I tipped up Revich in this last year and he was a fine third and could easily go two places better. However, everything is perfect for ISLA KAI to run a big race with a small field ideal for a horse who likes to go forward in the early stages. The Nigel Tinkler-trained runner has been in good form recently and followed up two decent third places with a win at Ripon, a track he handles well. A mark of 93 is not impossible and he loves juice in the ground.
13:30 Newbury – Sense of Duty
ITV also go to Newbury Saturday for this Group 3 World Trophy over 5f. Not a race I can advise too accurately on as SENSE OF DUTY looked a right prospect last season but has been off the track a long time. It’s interesting Tom Marquand ditches My Prospero up at Ayr for my William Haggas-trained selection but whether she will be up to beating Raasel after the lay-off is hard to say.
13:50 Ayr – Royal Rhyme
Up in class here for a Listed event over 1m2f. With My Prospero a non runner this opens up a bit and it should rest between ROYAL RHYME and Pride of America with the advantage to the former getting 5lb. The key to Royal Rhyme is give in the ground and he’s looked good on soft at both Goodwood and Newmarket this season. The Karl Burke challenger can race close to the pace and even lead if he wants to so should take plenty of beating under Clifford Lee.
14:05 Newbury – Valsad
A handicap over an extended 1m5f. There should be a strong gallop here with Not so Sleepy probably prepping for the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle. That pace will suit VALSAD who really impressed when scoring at Southwell last time. This trip should be no issue and a bit of juice in the ground is no issue either. James Doyle is a bonus for Harry and Roger Charlton.

14:25 Ayr – Bergerac (each way)
The warm up for the Ayr Gold Cup with the Silver Cup over 6f. Not so long ago this column tipped up both the Silver and Gold Cup winners on the same card. Fingers crossed lightning strikes twice! Top weight BERGERAC was sixth in the main event last year off a mark of 98 and comes here on 90 after four flops this year. He’s not had any juice in the ground for some time and clearly he’s very well handicapped for Kevin Ryan and Kieren Fallon. Might well have a big each-way chance despite the welter burden of 9st 12lb.
14:40 Newbury – Gaassee
Another handicap this time over 1m2f. GAASSEE has been a big disappointment for some time now but ran a fine race for this column when fourth at Haydock in July. He was very slowly away at Sandown last timed is dropped another 1lb to 98 which means he’s handicapped to have every chance. This testing ground is ideal and Tom Marquand is on top.
15:00 Ayr – Navassa Island (each way)
A Group 3 in the Firth of Clyde for juvenile fillies over 6f. A race that rarely brings much quality to the table. NAVASSA ISLAND has never raced on ground this soft but her sire Territories when on mud in style and I’ll take a chance she will outstay a few of this for Irish raider Michael O’Callaghan and Kieren Fallon again! The Curragh maiden winner ran on well to score over 6f last time and this might not take much winning unless Raqiya is special. Have a few quid on each way.
15:15 Newbury – Haatem
A Group 2 for youngsters in the Mill Reef over 6f. HAATEM flopped badly in the Gimcrack at York but that was on fast ground and on good to soft he was impressive at Goodwood when defeating the subsequent Champagne winner Iberian. That Vintage success was over 7f and that stamina might be useful here. Mister Sketch could obviously be a huge danger.
15:35 Ayr – Albasheer (each way)
The big betting race of the day in the Ayr Gold Cup over 6f. ALBASHEER might be a little high in the handicap now but I can’t help but feel he will give us something to shout about for Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle. My selection has been in great form recently, with a decent effort at the Curragh four runs ago followed by an eighth in the Stewards’ Cup and a dead-heat at York. He kept on down the field at the Curragh last time and has each-way claims.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
