13:30 – Good Land
Cheltenham 2023 Wednesday gets under way with the Grade 1 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle over two miles and five furlongs. GOOD LAND might not be quite good enough if there is a real peach in here, but he has stamina proven and has been in great form for Barry Connell and Michael O’Sullivan.
A Grade 1 winner at Leopardstown last time my hope should travel well as he can be a bit free but that hasn’t stopped him so far. An each-way chance.
14:10 – Thyme Hill
Another Grade 1 in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase over an extended three miles. I’ve long thought THYME HILL is a cracking each-way bet for this and he should give Micheal Nolan a great ride for the master Philip Hobbs who has now linked up with Johnson White his longtime assistant.
Thyme Hill was a bity sticky in his jumping over fences earlier this term, but he got it all together at Kempton last time and he’s got the best hurdling from in this having finished second to Flooring Porter in the 2022 Stayers’ Hurdle. Massive chance if his jumping holds up.

14:50 – Beacon Edge
The Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle over two miles and five furlongs. Not many of these look well handicapped but one who could be is BEACON EDGE with a chance to roll back the years for Noel Meade.
Michael O’Sullivan is on top a horse who is on a mark of 147 having once been as high as 158. My hope was far from disgraced behind Blazing Khal at Navan last time and was once fourth behind Flooring Porter in the 2021 Stayers’ Hurdle. At the age of nine he might not quite be past a peak just yet.
15:30 – Edwardstone
The big race of the day in the Grade 1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase over two miles. EDWARDSTONE might not want the ground to be too soft but he does have form with juice and is probably more reliable than Energumene who sometimes can be a weak finisher.
With Editeur du Gite likely to go off hard in front, I expect Edwardstone – beaten by the latter last time when given too much to do and having weakened once making up a lot of ground – and Energumene to sit in behind and pounce late and I’m gunning for the Arkle hero to come out on top for Tom Cannon and Alan King.

16:10 – Delta Work
A bit of fun here in the Glenfarclas Chase over three miles and six furlongs. Very easy to stick with defending champion DELTA WORK for Keith Donoghue and Gordon Elliott. Although rated lower than Galvin, the selection has many more Grade 1 wins to his name and was really good in this last year when seeing off Tiger Roll much to the horror of the crowd. I suspect they will be happier if he scores this time!
16:50 – Third Time Lucki
The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup over two miles. There’s no doubt THIRD TIME LUCKI would prefer the ground to dry out as quickly as possible but he’s got the ability to make a splash here for jockey Harry and trainer Dan Skelton.
A former County Hurdle sixth and Bumper fourth returned to form at Sandown last time and gets in here off a mark of 149 having once been up to 153.
17:30 – Its For Me
Finally the Grade 1 Weatherbys Champion Bumper over an extended two miles. There’s no doubt this is a guessing game but the pin has come down on IT’S FOR ME for Paul Townend and Willie Mullins.
The Jeu St Eloi gelding blitzed his rivals in a point-to-point and hacked up at Navan on bumper debut. Looks nippy and stays well. Ground should be fine.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
