THAT’S DAY 3 DONE, FOLKS. BUT DON’T MISS MORE TOP TIPS FOR FRIDAY AT CHELTENHAM:

Having spent the last two days at Prestbury Park and noted the vibes, whispers and of course the more pertinent factors of weather, ground and stable form, I have re-shaped my selections for the third day races I previewed before. A week is a huge amount of time in this sport!

13:30 – James Du Berlais (each way) & Appreciate It Reverse Forecast

Mighty Potter is still the most likely winner of this opening Turners Novice Chase but he’s totally found in the market, so I am still going to stick with my original each-way call of James Du Berlais as his Dublin run was simply too bad to be true. But let me add another betting stick to my punting profile by suggesting a forecast bet with Appreciate It in case the ‘Potter’ horse runs way below par. All the fancy horses on day one seemed to run well, but by and large every year several red hot favourites simply do not run up to their marks. I fancy Shishkin could well fall in that category today but I think that Mighty Potter is next best on that ‘to get’ list.

14:10 – Thanksforthehelp, Coltor (each way) & Takarengo (each way)

With Perceval not set to line up, I am still quite happy to stand by my other original selection although I am slightly worried that the ground may well be sticky enough for Coltor. I still think Roger Fell’s horse is overpriced simply because his handler is not recognised as a specialist national hunt trainer.

But the additional bet has to be a combination forecast and tricast. It only needs to cop once especially in a big handicap such as this and the whole meeting and a whole lot more is paid for.

So add to Coltor the likely favourite Thanksforthehelp, an impressive winner last time out at Chepstow, and joining the team because someone from the Pipe yard told me they think he could be a 140’s rated horse who runs off 128, and huge Irish outsider Takarengo. The last named has been kept to two and two and half miles for his last two runs, but is set to relish this step back to three, coincidentally a never nearer 6th of 17 to Perceval Legallois three outings back. I fancy he can outrun that price so may also be worth an each-way play with the extra places up for grabs.

14:50 – Hitman (each way) & Ga Law (each way)

I have to say I am worried about the ground for Hitman and I wouldn’t be wholly surprised if Nicholls took him out and saved his youngster for a shot at Aintree. In the circumstances and still being a relative Shishkin non believer, I was delighted to see Ga Law declared for this instead of the Gold Cup. His win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup smacked of a crack over further and he duly ran an outstanding race in the SkyBet Chase only to fall at the last when holding every chance. But the New Course is his domain and if he can keep tabs on Shishkin coming down the hill I feel he could have every chance of outstaying the red hot favourite particularly as the Henderson horses seem to be running below par.

15:30 – Gold Tweet (each way)

With Marie’s Rock having surprisingly taken in the Mares Hurdle on the opening day, the make and shape of the Stayers Hurdle has changed radically. You still have to be worried about the interrupted preps of Blazing Khal and Flooring Porter here and surely the other jockeys won’t let Danny Mullins have his own way up front for the third successive year on the reigning champion.

So my substitute selections has to be the French raider Gold Tweet whose course win has been cast aside as us Brits and Irish still have that snobbery factor against any foreign raiders at the Festival. He travelled beautifully through the race that day and quickened up like a good class stayer and double figure odds are too big.

16:10 – Escaria Ten (each way)

We are just left with the one representative here, but I am happy to row in with Escaria Ten. I spoke to someone from the Gordon Elliott yard over the weekend and he told me that the nine-year-old worked as well as he has ever done over the past few months and they are more than hopeful that the drop in trip will do the trick; he is still an enticing play.

16:50 – Luccia

I said very little about this race last week, but having bypassed the Supreme I feel all Luccia has to do is put in a clear round. Yes, there are several interesting rivals in the form of the unbeaten Magical Zoe, staying flat star Princess Zoe and Lot of Joy, but aside from the slight concern of the form of Henderson’s horses Luccia has by far the biggest engine in this big field and just needs the luck in the run to score.

17:30 – Angels Dawn

The selection is now short enough in the betting in what is always a competitive renewal, but has strong claims and the only one I contemplated added to the list was Beauport who remains a young horse with his best staying days ahead of him. However, he too is short enough in the market to contemplating to my betting portfolio, but I certainly wouldn’t put you off having a saver on him if you wanted to. I have also heard that Dunboyne is strongly fancied by connections but he too has probably been found in the betting.
