The Cheltenham Festival 2023 is getting closer and we’ve got jump jockey icon turned tactical guru Ruby Walsh and top pundit Rory Delargy with us every week to hopefully get you more bang for your buck.

The Champion Chase is the fourth race on Day 2 of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, and the lads have been looking at the markets to hopefully find you a winner.

Last year’s winner Energumene and Arkle Chase winner Edwardstone are very close in the betting but are you siding with the Irish or the English runner?

Rory’s Champion Chase preview

Last year’s Arkle Chase winner Edwardstone has looked almost flawless over fences but unseated his rider at Kempton over Christmas. I’m inclined to forgive him for that Kempton race and he was fine at Cheltenham in the rearranged Clarence House Chase in January which looks the strongest piece of form going into the Champion Chase as all three principals will clash again.

Tom Cannon had his eyes on Energumene all the way and that let Editeur Du Gite win. Niall Houlihan gave him a brilliant ride but it’s worth noting that was just the jockey’s second win over fences this season – the other was also on Editeur Du Gite.

Trainer Alan King said that he wants to avoid running Edwardstone on good ground so we’ll need to watch that space also. If Gentleman De Mee lines up you can be sure Editeur Du Gite won’t get a solo upfront again. He’ll be harried all the way.

It also allows gives Paul Townend options on Energumene as he may be happy to let those two do the donkey work up front. Nuba Negra doesn’t look good enough to win it.

Verdict: So despite the fast-finishing defeat last time, Edwardstone enhanced his chances for the Champion Chase. He’s more likely to have the race run to suit him this time and he should deliver. There are a couple in here that could run well but everything needs to be in their favour for that to happen.
