Paddy Power horse racing expert Ruby Walsh has identified a trio of runners that could earn Cheltenham Festival victories despite losing at the Dublin Racing Festival.
The Leopardstown meeting has thrown up a host of subsequent winners at the four-day fiesta in March due to the quality of runners on show, including a couple of years ago when five defeated horses went on to score at Cheltenham.
The latest episode of our Cheltenham Countdown podcast series included a question from a listener asking Ruby and ace tipster Rory Delargy who they fancied to bounce back from failing to win at the Dublin Racing Festival.
Paddy’s resident jockey-turned-pundit Ruby picked out three to note, while a couple of names came to mind for Rory… You can listen to the episode in full below!
Ruby Walsh:
“Gaillard Du Mesnil going up to the National Hunt Chase, Fact To File in a strongly-run Champion Bumper and Appreciate It stepping up in trip [for the Turners Novices’ Chase] – there’s been five in years gone by and there’s three off the top of my head.
“I think there’ll be loads of horses that didn’t win at the Dublin Racing Festival that could go and win at Cheltenham.”
Rory Delargy:
“Liberty Dance was fourth in the Paddy Mullins Mares Handicap Hurdle and that is the race at the Dublin Racing Festival that has produced the most Cheltenham Festival winners – Mrs Milner, Telmesomethinggirl and Heaven Help Us all went on to score a couple of years ago – and that is a remarkable stat.
“I wouldn’t rule out Stattler [in the Gold Cup], either.
“There are plenty of them as it was a meeting with an awful lot of depth. It’s worth pointing out that five beaten horses from two years ago went on to win at the Festival.
“You’re going to find that when you get fields that we had at the Dublin Racing Festival you’re going to get beaten horses coming out and winning at Cheltenham just because that’s the way it’s set up.”
