The Cheltenham Festival 2023 is just three weeks away we’ve got jump jockey icon turned tactical guru Ruby Walsh and top pundit Rory Delargy with us every week to hopefully get you more bang for your buck.
The Champion Hurdle is the feature on Day 1 of this year’s Cheltenham Festival with Constitution Hill the hot favourite with State Man his most likely competitor. But is there any value in the betting?
Verdict: Constitution Hill will be long odds on and it looks like it’s him against State Man in the Champion Hurdle. People are saying the good ground could be an issue for Constitution Hill but you only have to look at his run last year in the Supreme Novices Hurdle to know that’s rubbish. That was his best run.
Constitution Hill looks fairly flawless at this stage and as we saw in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, if there’s no pace, he just goes on his own. Maybe a tactical and slow-run race could cause an upset but it’s hard to imagine him not winning.
My first three are Constitution Hill, State Man and I’m going for First Street at a big price.
He lost at Wincanton last weekend but that race is all about speed and he was held up. You can’t give anything away there.
First Street has got good form this season and he goes well at Cheltenham. I can see him running into a place after coming through beaten horses in the race. He could potentially finish second if State Man goes at it early with Constitution Hill and tires on the run in.
Cheltenham Tips: Rory Delargy’s 40/1 Champion Hurdle shout non runner no bet
Rory is behind Constitution Hill but he reckons First Street could be a value each-way pick in the Tuesday feature.
