A big field for this 2-mile maiden hurdle where GORGEOUS SUSPECT gets the nap vote for Aidan Anthony Howard and Simon Torrens following some nice bits of form in recent seasons. This horse returns to maiden company having finished down the field in a Cork handicap in December with the drop in trip and drying ground conditions looking a positive towards a big run. The son of Authorised is lightly raced and finished third to Banbridge at Punchestown on debut in May 2021 before a second-place effort at Fairyhouse followed in April of last year.
The form of that race has worked out extremely well with a host of subsequent winners and he wasn’t disgraced on a comeback run at Naas last November behind Ashroe Diamond. He didn’t see out the trip at Cork and should represent value considering the big yards of Henry De Bromhead (Kudasheva), Willie Mullins (Feu Du Bresil) and Gordon Elliott (Clodders Dream) are represented.
HIDDENVALLEY LAKE is one of many horses in action here with an entry in next month’s Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival with Henry De Bromhead’s runner looking more than good enough to remain unbeaten with victory in the feature Surehaul Novice Hurdle. The son of Sholokhov ran out a very impressive winner when landing a graded contest at Cork in December but will need to improve again now rated 2Ibs lower on official ratings to main rival Corbetts Cross whilst handing Emmett Mullins’ runner 6Ibs in opposition today.
Paul Byrne purchased Corbetts Cross from Eugene O’Sullivan and runs for Mullins for the first time following back-to-back wins at Limerick and Fairyhouse – he’s another Albert Bartlett hopeful but drying ground is a slight concern. Elsewhere, Walk In The Brise and Search For Glory move into graded company for Gordon Elliott and Willie Mullins, but Hiddenvalley Lake looks a special horse for the future and should have the scope and class to see off his rivals before going clear ante-post favourite for the Albert Barlett.
WILLYWAMPUS is knocking on the door and deserves to get his head in-front over fences and hopefully will on debut for new trainer Eamon Countney with Phillip Enright booked in this final race at Clonmel on Thursday. The son of Zoffany likes to race only one way, from the front and was second on three successive occasions last November at Thurles, Punchestown and Gowran Park having found Scalor, Kilcruit and Yabo too good. He returns from a break and with Enright booked in replacement of Jordan Canavan, this six-year-old can go close to victory in what looks an open contest with Conna Cottage, Cregane Ned and Old Soul just three others with decent chances in opposition.
