Fancy a shot at £20k at Glorious Goodwood today?

Baaeed faces six rivals in the Sussex Stakes as the unbeaten superstar attempts to take his perfect record to nine.

Alcohol Free is among the principal threats in Wednesday’s 3.35pm at Goodwood as Andrew Balding steps last year’s winner back up in trip after scoring in the July Cup earlier this month.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Order Of Australia has another crack at Baaeed after placing third in last month’s Queen Anne Stakes while a late setback means 2000 Guineas winner Coroebus misses out so William Buick rides French Derby third Modern Games for Charlie Appleby.

You can find our nifty guide to the Sussex Stakes runner plus tips from Paddy Power’s horse racing experts below. The latest prices can be found on the Paddy Power website or via our snazzy widgets below.

Sussex Stakes runners

Baaeed

Trainer: William Haggas Jockey: Jim Crowley Age: 4 Weight: 9st 10lbs Draw: 2

Top-class colt who won has easily stretched his unbeaten record to 8 with wins in Lockinge at Newbury and Queen Anne at Royal Ascot this summer. Can’t be opposed.

Bathrat Leon

Trainer: Yoshito Yahagi Jockey: Ryusei Sakai Age: 4 Weight: 9st 10lbs Draw: 5

Japanese-trained colt who bounced back from some lesser efforts in his native country when springing an 80/1 surprise in Group 2 Godolphin Mile at Meydan in March. It would nearly as big a shock were he to lower the colours of Baaeed here.

Chindit

Trainer: Richard Hannon Jockey: Pat Dobbs Age: 4 Weight: 9st 10lbs Draw: 4

Landed the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot earlier this month but had been firmly put in his place by Baaeed in the Lockinge and Queen Anne prior to that.

Order Of Australia

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 5 Weight: 9st 10lbs Draw: 7

Took the Breeders’ Cup Mile as a 3-y-o. Arrives on the back of a second successive win in the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh 10 days ago but he has nearly 6 lengths to make up on Baaeed from the Queen Anne.

Alcohol Free

Trainer: Andrew Balding Jockey: Rob Hornby Age: 4 Weight: 9st 7lbs Draw: 3

Won this race last year and bounced back to form with a bang when landing a fourth Group 1 success of her career in the July Cup at Newmarket (6f) 18 days ago. Looks sure to be involved in the battle for minor honours but whether she can trouble the favourite is another matter.

Angel Bleu

Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Frankie Dettori Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 6

Winner of the Vintage at this meeting and a pair of French Group 1s (7f/1m) in an excellent 2-y-o campaign. Showed he’s trained on when 1½ lengths third to Perfect Power and Lusail in Greenham on reappearance but well held in St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot since.

Modern Games

Trainer: Charlie Appleby Jockey: William Buick Age: 3 Weight: 9st 2lbs Draw: 1

Big improver last autumn, culiminating with a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf success. Bagged a second Group 1 on foreign soil when seeing off 14 rivals in the French 2000 Guineas on his reappearance and has run creditably when beaten at Group 1 level in France twice since.

Sussex Stakes tips

Matt Chapman: he feature of the week in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes over 1m. That’s not to say it’s a big betting heat, with BAAEED surely too good off a BHA rating of 128 after his Queen Anne romp. This is not a bad field, but Baaeed should just be too good for William Haggas and Jim Crowley. Has form at the track as he was brilliant in a Group 3 at this meeting last year. For forecast players, I will take Modern Games for Godolphin who has always been underrated.

Rory Delargy: ALCOHOL FREE is the one to chase home BAAEED in the Sussex Stakes, and with the favourite unbackable, the forecast with last year’s heroine seems the best approach.

Timeform: With 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace winner Coroebus a late absentee, it’s hard to see anything being able to push BAAEED enough to put his unbeaten record under serious threat. Last year’s winner Alcohol Free is fresh from another top-level success at Newmarket and could be the one to chase the William Haggas-trained colt home.
