14:00 – Ami Des Flots

A return to his early 2021 Irish best could suffice for Fire Squadron, but hopes seemingly rest with the first-time cheekpieces following an uninspiring British debut. AMI DES FLOTS and Sure Touch appeal more, the former taken to step up further still on last month’s highly encouraging Ffos Las second over this longer trip and with one or two doubts lingering over the latter’s ability to jump sufficiently cleanly under pressure late on.

14:30 – State Crown

Returning topweight Champagne City was in good form last year and should be on the premises if primed to go after his break. However, dual C&D winner STATE CROWN (nap) is 2lb below his last winning mark and the return to this track is a big plus. He gets the vote ahead of recent course winner Clearance, with Krypton Gold best of the others.

15:05 – Wild Max

Unless the switch to regulation fences proves transformative for Hard Lines (second best), there’s a case to say that this will represent WILD MAX‘s easiest assignment of the season so far, as he’s taken on main rivals with BHA marks of 145, 123 and 112 respectively on his three most recent chasing starts. He looks unopposable despite the double penalty.

15:40 – Mucuna

It’s a coin toss between old rivals Free Chakarte and MUCUNA, both of whom followed up hurdling debut successes with defeats that appeared to owe at least as much to mistakes as to their penalties. A return to the tidy round of jumping that saw Milton Harris’s filly emerge on top at Aintree, allied to the 7lb claim of Bradley Harris, can see Mucuna uphold previous superiority.

16:13 – Henry Box Brown

Ffos Las winner Cry Wolf has a decent chance of following up but narrow preference is for topweight HENRY BOX BROWN now that he tackles the longer trip he has been hinting will suit him. Cardboard Gangster would be on an unchanged mark were he to turn up here after winning over fences at Perth yesterday. Our Three Sons may prove best of the remainder.

16:50 – Nelsons Rock

Joe Tizzard has a record of six winners from seven runners in chases at Newton Abbot since taking over the license. His NELSONS ROCK won with plenty in hand over C&D last time and Port O’Clock might give him a nice tow into this race. The last named, 4lb well-in following his Worcester near-miss, rates the logical threat.

17:23 – Ellies Sister

Those to have run under rules are not difficult to oppose so this should go to a newcomer and the ones who make most appeal on paper are ELLIES SISTER, the Tom Lacey-trained Masked Matgil (second choice) and point winner Lock Out. The selection is a sister to a useful sort and may be good enough to make a winning start.
