Cracks seem to be appearing in the relationship between Frankie Dettori and John Gosden after a disappointing Royal Ascot.
Veteran trainer Gosden was critical of some of the Italian’s rides at the five-day meeting, including the defeat of Stradivarius when chasing a record-equalling fourth Ascot Gold Cup.
The yard have opted against booking Dettori to ride Sunray Major and Stowell at Newmarket on Saturday, with James Doyle and Robert Havlin getting the rides respectively. A meeting was reportedly set to take place between the two parties on Friday and Paddy Power traders have already priced up a market on John & Thady Gosden Next Retained Rider.
Holly Doyle and James Doyle head the betting but our resident jockey-turned-pundit Ruby Walsh believes the Gosdens would find it difficult to replace Frankie if a parting of the ways does occur.
Ruby Walsh:
“There’s obviously air that needs to be cleared as what’s gone on since Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup has been pretty public.
“With some of the comments like Frankie being at a wedding the week before Royal Ascot and he’s been on holiday since, you’re just wondering is Mr Gosden going to put the squeeze on Frankie. Are you knuckling down to do this or are you part time?
“An operation like John Gosden’s needs a full-time jockey. Whatever way you look at it, replacing Frankie Dettori isn’t that simple.
“Like with everything, time will tell.”
