ITV Saturday starts here with a handicap over 6f. This is wide open. RAATEA was not good enough at York last time but has every chance on his third behind Gale Force Maya at Newmarket a few runs ago. The Julie Camacho runner stayed on really well that day and that stamina will be useful here. Jason Hart takes the ride. Eachway chance.
ITV are also at Newmarket Saturday for this Listed Empress Fillies’ Stakes for 2yo over 6f. Lots of promising types here. The obvious exciting filly is MINNETONKA, who goes for Richard Hannon and Jim Crowley. The daughter of Kingman hacked up at Salisbury first time and has a powerful owner-breeder. Could be anything.
This is the Group 3 Chipchase for 3yo+ over 6f. A decent renewal. GLEN SHIEL is getting on a bit now at the age of eight but he has every chance of making a splash at this level for Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle. The former Group 1 winner was not disgraced at the Curragh last time and if the surface is still running slow that will be no problem at all.
Another Listed prize here in the Fred Archer for 4yo+ over 1m4f. Big race for the sponsor House of Cavani who have excellent suits! And yes I have a few – and am expecting a few more! I’ll risk STOWELL here for the Gosdens and Robert Havlin against the two Charlie Appleby runners. My hope has a bit to find on ratings and probably didn’t stay a mile and six furlongs at Ascot last time behind Get Shirty. Every chance.
Now the Northumberland Vase for 3yo+ over an extended 2m. EVALUATION is on a five-timer and is whizzing up the handicap ranks as he goes off a mark of 84 having started his run off 68 at Wetherby. Under 10st it won’t be easy under Callum Rodriguez but my hope has form on the all-weather and stays well do maybe he can pull it off for Keith Dalgleish.
The Group 3 Criterion for 3yo+ over 7f. Another one of the Gosdens here for me with SUNRAY MAJOR under the excellent James Doyle. My hope travelled like a machine behind Baaeed in the Lockinge but didn’t get home over a mile. Then he was just behind Laneqash at Haydock last time when the latter probably should have scored. However, Sunray Major did not get a clear run that day and I think he was unlucky to be back in fourth.

The big betting race of the day in the Northumberland Plate Handicap for 3yo+ over an extended 2m. I’ll take a chance with another Keith Dalgleish runner in the shape of the seven-year-old ALRIGHT SUNSHINE who is ridden by Billy Garrity. My hope has a decent racing weight of 9st 1lb, and a mark of 99 is workable as he showed when fourth behind Get Shirty at Royal Ascot. That was over a bit shorter than this but he stays no problem at all. Strong place claims at least. Was an unlucky 10thlast year off the same mark.

The Group 1 Irish Derby over 1m4f. Tuesday was good for this column in the Oaks but I’m all over Derby third WESTOVER here for Ralph Beckett. The stayer was very strong at the finish at Epsom after not having the speed to take gaps at a crucial stage and he should be too strong here for Colen Keane and Ralph Beckett. Keane is a class act but I’m gutted Rob Hornby – Westover’s regular partner – has been taken off the horse. He deserved this huge chance.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
