I like Gaassee for William Haggas but it’s really hard to get a handle on just how good he is. He impressed in both of his wins at Chester and Newcastle and he followed that up at Kempton in December. He’s got turf pedigree but he’s done all of his racing on the all-weather track but that’s because of opportunity. He was racing in November and December to get his rating. There’s no reason to think that he won’t be as good on turf. He looks hard to beat, he’ll do me!
The draw will be key here and it’s also worth looking at how early races at York have played out. When the going is fresh, you want to be on the far side. I like Aberama Gold for Silvestre De Sousa and Keith Dalgleish but I’m taking a little chance. He’s been slightly out of form this season but he’s a course winner. He’s had wind surgery since we last saw him and he’s had a three month break. If there’s a time to back him, it’s here.

I like Minzaal and in Owen Burrows, he’s got a trainer who will be very patient with him. He looked good as a juvenile, he won at York in 2020 and he impressed in his two starts last year at Ascot. He finished second behind Tis Marvellous in the Oakman Stakes and backed that up by finishing third behind Creative Force in the Champions Sprint Stakes. He’s got a good enough draw in stall six and the track suits him. Minzaal will do me, even though Dragon Symbol is a big danger.
I don’t have a lot of confidence in this race in terms of betting so I’ll be watching instead. Ching Shih is of similar calibre to The Algarve but she’s bred for this and could go well.
Samburu’s form is far from red hot and I’ve got major doubts about him. He’s bound to improve and he could win but I’m siding with Mojomaker for for William Buick and David Loughnane. He’s a solid performer for an underrated stable. His horses frequently under bet. The Buick booking is solid and he stays 7f.
