13:25 Haydock – Jonbon
What a day of action on ITV. While the feature is the Shishkin v Energumene smash-up at Ascot, there’s plenty of informative Cheltenham and possibly Aintree clues on show too. We start with a Grade 2 Hurdle where Jonbon will look to continue his ascent in the hurdling ranks and defy a 5lb penalty after his Ascot win. He’ll be odds-on but can oblige. The Nicky Henderson stable will look to see how Might I fares given he was a distant 14l second to Jonbon’s stablemate Constitution Hill in a Sandown novices hurdle last month.

13:45 Ascot – Garry Clermont
The top weight Garry Clermont has put up two promising runs at the track and looks like he is crying out for the step up in trip. He’s proven on soft ground has everything going for him. Stellar Magic is the danger. If he has improved for his seasonal debut here last month when second to Up For Parol he is definitely a player.
14:00 Haydock – Hunters Call
It seems a little strange to put up a 12-year-old in a two-mile Champion Hurdle trial, but Hunters Call is a very strong traveller in his races and handles soft ground. If the favourite and four-timer chasing Tommys Oscar has a flaw, it might be that he isn’t as good on very soft ground as he is on decent ground.
14:20 Ascot – Molly Olly’s Wishes
Dan Skelton’s mare looked so good when winning over 2m at Wetherby two starts ago beating smart French mare Paul’s Saga, but disappointed at Ascot. Molly Olly’s Wishes steps up to 3m now and won at this trip at Kempton in December 2020. Willie Mullins’ My Sister Sarah has to be respected, but needs to bounce back form a disappointing run at Leopardstown last time.

14:35 Haydock – Royale Pagaille
It was very hard to go against Remastered getting weight off the top-weight Royale Pagaille but Venetia Williams’ runner excels in heavy ground and this feels like a home game for him. He has to concede a lot of weight, but he’s capable of doing it to follow up last year’s success. Tom Scudamore rode him to victory then, but rides Remastered now for his boss David Pipe.
14:55 Ascot – Fanion D’estruval
He won very nicely over 2m 4f at Newbury and got a bump up the weights, but Lucy Turner’s 7lb claim will offset some of that. Fanion D’estruval finished fourth in the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase at the track last year behind First Flow. This should set up nicely for him.

15:15 Taunton – Yala Enki
This looks like a case of the champion trainer plotting one to win a valuable prize. This will be Yala Enki’s Gold Cup and he will be ready to rock and comes in off the back of a good win at Cheltenham last November. He’s well suited by the race conditions.
15:35 Ascot – Shishkin
Two unbeaten chasers in the Irish challenger Energumene and England’s great hope, Shishkin. There is no doubt that Willie Mullins’ charge is better going right-handed than left-handed so this is his big chance. If they go fast it will suit Shishkin as he is a strong stayer. Both have won over further than the minimum 2m trip and the result could come down to one mistake from either runner. My feeling is Shiskin will pick Energumene off late on. First Flow won this contest last year and seems to saves his best for Ascot.
