Ailie Rose has been unlucky to bump into a couple of good prospects at Down Royal the last twice and she can gain a deserved success here. Ailie Rose was runner-up behind Hollow Games (who subsequently won a Grade 3 and was third in a Grade 1) and she filled the same position behind the unbeaten Gerri Colombe, who is also likely to have graded races on his agenda. That form looks the best on offer and she is worth siding with.
Fever Roque was strong in the betting at Market Rasen on Boxing Day and he justified that support in style, forging clear to win by 14 lengths. That was an emphatic victory and a 9 lb higher mark might not be enough to stop this lightly-raced type from following up. The excellent form of trainer Rebecca Menzies is another positive.
Crack du Ninian had to settle for second over this course and distance last week when bidding to complete the hat-trick, but he ran well in defeat and was simply unlucky to bump into such a well-handicapped rival. Crack du Ninian had won his two previous starts over fences, quickly proving himself to be a better chaser than hurdler, and he could still have a bit more to offer in this sphere.
Barnay failed to make an instant impact over fences but the handicapper quickly relented and he almost took advantage at Sedgefield on Boxing Day. Barnay was well backed and looked set to justify the support when edging ahead up the run-in, but he was overhauled in the final strides. That was comfortably his best effort in this sphere and he could still have a bit more to offer over fences, so he can score off this 4 lb higher mark.
Douglas Talking has progressed with each start over hurdles and this bumper winner looks to have been handed a fair opening handicap mark. He was a good third over course and distance last month and is expected to take another step forward with that outing under his belt.
Nicky Richard has a fine record in bumpers and his debutant here, Tfou, makes appeal on paper. Tfou is a half-brother to three winners and cost €180,000 as a three-year-old. He will have the assistance of Brian Hughes in the saddle and, given the yard’s excellent record in bumpers, Tfou should be fit enough to do himself justice at the first attempt.
