An amateur jockeys’ handicap to kick off and INTERNATIONAL LAW looks one of the more likely types under Serena Brotherton. He hasn’t won since March last year, but he has now slipped 4 lb below that winning mark, and was caught wide when finishing midfield over course and distance a fortnight ago. The booking of Brotherton seems a sign of intent by connections and he is more than capable of taking this from this mark. Kingson knows where the winning post is, which counts for plenty at this level, so he’s feared most.

Newcastle 13:00 – Lord Paramount
This doesn’t look the strongest race of its type, so a chance is taken on a newcomer, with LORD PARAMOUNT making the most appeal on paper. He is a half-brother to Saint Lawrence, who is a useful sort for these connections, and Roger Varian has unleashed some smart types at this track in recent years. Sen Ding sets the form standard and should be firmly in the mix also, whilst the Karl Burke-pair Roamin In Gloamin and Beneficiary may also feature.
Newcastle 13:30 – Lucky Man
This looks a competitive nursery, but LUCKY MAN confirmed his previous promise when opening his account over this course and distance in November, and he can be forgiven his latest start at Southwell where he hindered his chance at the start. The form of his win has worked out well, with the third and fifth both winning next time, and Lucky Man appeals as still being well treated. Lingfield scorer Aye Catcher and Lunasa, who is back in a handicap, are others to consider.

Newcastle 14:00 – Desert Emperor
Another step forward may be required, but it is hard to oppose DESERT EMPEROR, who arrives on a roll having won three of his last four starts. He was well-in under a penalty at Wolverhampton last time, but landed prohibitive odds with more in hand than the neck margin implies, around three lengths clear and only closed down because his rider took it easy in the closing stages. A 3 lb rise in the weights shouldn’t pose a problem and the drop in trip isn’t much of a concern either at this stiffer track. Society Red is now an eight-year-old, but he also arrives on the back of a win and is feared most.
Newcastle 14:35 – Spartan Fighter
SPARTAN FIGHTER is thriving of late, winning three of his last four starts all at this track, and showing a tenacious attitude when holding off another well-treated course specialist over course and distance last time. He hasn’t had a lot of racing at this trip, so could have more to offer, and he could potentially get an easy time of it in front in another small field. Sir Maxi made a good start for Richard Fahey when runner-up at Southwell last time and looks the likely danger.
Newcastle 15:10 – Harvest Day
HARVEST DAY is by no means bombproof given her tardiness at the start, but she scored with a bit in hand over course and distance last time, and still looks well treated after a small rise, so she’s a solid choice to go in again faced with some sketchy opposition. Abnaa is pretty consistent (wasn’t seen to best effect last time), so he’s likely to be involved in the finish, and Bobby Joe Leg can’t be ruled out, either.

Newcastle 15:40 – Cephalus
CEPHALUS had plenty left in the tank when landing a Southwell nursery upped to this trip last week, overcoming a pace bias in the process, and, effectively 1 lb ahead of the handicapper under a penalty, this upwardly-mobile colt is taken to complete the hat-trick. Sparka went agonisingly close here when last seen in November and merits respect, but Devasboy is probably on a fair mark and he is feared most.
