Based on his Flat ability, MORDRED has an attractive mark to work with on his handicap hurdle debut and first run for the in-form Milton Harris. He’s the selection ahead of Not Sure, who is better than he showed at Ascot last time on his first handicap outing.
The lightly raced six-year-old OBEY THE RULES (NAP) is on a roll, as is the case with many of Donald McCain’s horses, and he can make it three wins from his last four starts. His old rival All Shook Up could be a big danger now back at a right-handed track, while last month’s Hereford winner Ben Buie could also be involved.
Those who have raced over hurdles set a modest standard and this should be a good opportunity for point winner SHOLOKJACK to make a winning start under rules for Dan Skelton. Catch The Swallows has been absent since winning a bumper at Bangor in January 2019 for David Pipe, but new trainer Venetia Williams can ready one after a long lay-off and he’s the main danger ahead of possible improver Let’s Have Another. Patient Owner may be an interesting each-way option at expected bigger odds.
Having won three Class 3 handicap chases this season, NEVILLE’S CROSS was a fair fourth in a Class 2 at Newbury last time and is taken to return to winning ways in this easier race. Jacamar went close at Wincanton yesterday and will have obvious claims if this doesn’t come too soon, while the lightly raced five-year-old Torigni may have more to offer.
This should be much more of a test for JETOILE than the maiden he won at Chepstow, particularly if Another Crick returns immediately to form following his wind surgery, but Ryan Potter’s charge did the job impressively. Last Quarter is another one to take seriously following his improved effort last time and Scipion, a newcomer to racing under rules, should be monitored in the market.

Preference is for SAN AGUSTIN, who battled well to finish a close second behind a well-handicapped rival at Market Rasen last month and is open to further progress over fences. Guillemot went close over hurdles at Chepstow last time and could pose a serious threat if he can continue the good work on his switch to chasing. Third choice is Clondaw Pretender, who rallied when runner-up at Newcastle four weeks ago and has claims if he can build on that.
The majority of these declarations are on a recovery mission. It’s possible that one or more of them could pull it off, but it’s hard to predict who with any confidence and consequently not hard to opt instead for STORM OF LIGHT – who has a very different profile as a promising handicap debutant. Rosy World is easily the most likely opposition on recent evidence. Prairie Town is third on the list.
