12:50 Fontwell – Flaminger

I quite like a horse in the second race on the card at Fontwell and that’s Gary Moore’s FLAMINGER. Moore has had quite a good start to the season, he has also done very well in the Autumn and his horse seem to be ticking over quite nicely. I believe his Flaminger is on a fair mark here, rated at 110. When you consider that he won at Fontwell first time out last season off 118, it becomes pretty clear that we are talking about a well-treated horse.

He may not be the most consistent and he lost his way a small bit towards the end of last season. However, he wasn’t totally disgraced at Plumpton back in March, and showed that when he is on-song, he’s still capable of being in the mix. That run came on a mark of 119, so he’s 9lbs lower in this contest. He really has been given a really good chance by the assessor and first time out might just be the time to catch him.

14:30 Uttoxeter – Red Lion Lad

This isn’t a bad little race, in fact it’s quite competitive. However, I feel David Pipe could be in for a good day at Uttoxeter. He’s got four or five interesting runners there throughout the card, one of which is RED LION LAD – who rates as my NAP of the day. There are loads of reasons to exact improvement from this horse.

He has had three starts in maiden and novice company last season, and on each occasion showed a little bit of promise. That was certainly the case at Chepstow on his last appearance when he was a staying on third over 2-and-a-half miles. He is a son of Flemensfirth, he has won a point-to-point over 3m and here he tackles 2m 6f for the first time.

He’s had a wind surgery as well over the summer and he now runs with a tongue tie as well. There is also due to be loads of rain around too and that should be in his favour too. So hopefully, Red Lion Lad has a bit in hand from his initial mark of 115 as he goes chasing in this one.

17:00 Southwell – Hackberry

This is an open looking handicap and we are honestly all guessing a little bit when it comes to Southwell because they are kicking off a new Tapeta surface on Tuesday. So, there is lots to look forward too and this is a pretty low-grade event. However, HACKBERRY just looks to me like one worth taking a chance on. I like the way Brian Ellison trains his horses and he has a really good record when either applying or switching headgear.

We’ve seen that in evidence with horses from his yard recently, with the likes of Cormier and Pallas Dancer all winning after the addition of headgear. Hackberry goes with first time cheekpiece in this race and that might just be able to spark a bit of improvement. He’s had a little break as well and was running in handicaps on the turf when we last saw him. However, prior to that, he did shape quite well at Wolverhampton back in July when third behind Swoon.

The handicapper was cruel on him that day, because he was a 100/1 shot in a novice and he finished third, which was a bit too close for comfort. He then went handicapping off a mark of 76, but only three runs later he is now down to 64 – and that’s a far more realistic mark for this horse. Hopefully, there is a fair bit of improvement come from him because we know that he handles the Tapeta. He won first time out on his debut at Newcastle in a bumper back in January and I reckon he’s a horse we are only starting to scratch the surface of. He might just spring a bit of surprise on Tuesday.
