Ohlala… with nine races and just over €8 million prizemoney on offer, this Sunday’s card at ParisLongchamp is by far one of the most competitive and exciting we have seen in a long time. The 100th running of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has incredible strength in depth and could literally be anyone’s race – especially with the extreme weather conditions we have experienced this week in Paris. I’ve had a sift through the SIX Group One races on the card and have a selection in each. Enjoy!
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
13:15 – Raclette
Kicking the afternoon off with the Prix Marcel Boussac, a race for two-year-old fillies that has played host to many top-class fillies including Found, Zarkava and Finsceal Beo. French master trainer Andre Fabre holds the key to the one mile contest this year and trains three of the nine declared runners. RACLETTE may be the most inexperienced of the entire field and the strength of her form is yet to be calculated but the daughter of Frankel has been nothing short of astonishing in her two wins to date. She has looked like every inch of the mile is needed and probably will get further next year according to Fabre. Although she is the only filly in the field without an official mark, the tough ground conditions should suit and even if this represents a huge jump up in class, it is difficult envisage Raclette not being involved at the finish.
13:50 – Ebro River
A hugely fascinating race where not only is EBRO RIVER the only Group One winner in the field, but the Hugo Palmer-trained colt is actually the only one of the nine runners to have even contested a race at the highest level. That does not make this a formality however and amongst Ebro River’s main rivals are the French-trained pair of Ancient Rome and Accakaba, the sole filly in the field. Ebro River is not penalised for his win in the Group One Phoenix Stakes at The Curragh and according to Palmer, will love the ground. His tough, grinding style and vast experience at this level could tip the balance in Ebro River’s favour here and the colt could provide Hugo Palmer with a first winner at ParisLongchamp since Covert Love back in 2015.
15:05 – Torquator Tasso (Each Way)
A race that has been built up so much over recent months, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe boasts an incredibly talented field of fifteen runners going to post for the €5 million race. With Paddy Power paying four places in the big one, I am going to attempt to go against the grain and suggest a few euros each-way on the German raider TORQUATOR TASSO.
It may turn out that he is outclassed on his first run in a French Group One but his German Group One record is nothing short of exceptional and reads 2,3,1,2,2,1. Form with dual-Group One winner Alpinista and last year’s Arc second In Swoop put Torquator in the place picture at least and with no stamina issues, this son of Alderflug is over-priced for me and if one or two of the big players were to disappoint, then he could well sneak into the frame.
15:50 – Sibila Spain
I see SIBILA SPAIN on the gallops most mornings in Chantilly and I love this filly and have done for a long time. This is the most interesting bet on the card for me and considering the Prix de l’Opera looks a little light on proven quality this year and if Sibila Spain is as good as her trainer Christopher Head (son of legendary trainer Freddy Head) says, then she can win a first Group one here.
The daughter of Frankel is already proven on the ground, she has a lovely free-going front-running style, she has already won around ParisLongchamp and her two fourth places at Group One level were both exceptional runs when considering the circumstances. In the Prix de Diane. Sibila Spain was drawn almost widest of the 18 runners and used a lot of her energy to get to the front in the early stages before being headed by Joan Of Arc in the final strides. In the French Guineas, she was lucky to stay on her feet due to being hampered by another rival and ran a huge race, staying on strongly through the line. I think she is a proper Group One runner and should prove that this weekend.
16:25 – Suesa
Nothing too original here, but I think that François Rohaut’s stable star SUESA can land a first Group One, especially given these conditions. Officially the highest-rated of the field, Suesa has been a model of consistency all season and showed blistering speed at Goodwood. Freshened up since her last start and returned to soft ground, I think that this exceptionally fast 5 furlongs can see Suesa at her very best. Along with Sibila Spain, she is my strongest bet on the card.
17:00 – Duhail
Andre Fabre’s ultra-consistent DUHAIL loves soft ground, which by the seventh race could be crucial and the son of Lope De Vega would be a well-deserving winner of the Prix De La Foret. With Marinafoot absent from the line-up, the 7 furlong is now cracked wide-open and Duhail could be the answer to what looks a very difficult puzzle. A model of consistency over course and distance, Duhail was also entered in a Group Two this weekend but considering Andre Fabre has opted for the Foret with the five-year-old, then a big performance can be expected.
