13:45 Newmarket – Ms Ghandi
Saturday’s ITV Racing gets under way here with a handicap over 1m2f and it’s a wide-open heat. MS GHANDI is exposed for Roger Varian and may be seen as a second string from the stable for many people.
However, she has proven stamina and should have a great each-way chance under Jack Mitchell. My selection just weakened late on over a mile and a half at Doncaster last time, but that was still a good effort and this trip is ideal.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?
14:05 Ascot – Hurricane Ivor
The coverage at Ascot starts with this Listed Rouse Stakes over 5 furlongs. HURRICANE IVOR and Tis Marvellous have both scored for this column in recent times, but it is the former I stick with on this occasion.
The William Haggas runner is improving fast and was a fine winner of the Portland Handicap at Doncaster before taking a Group 3 event at Newbury. He has to give weight away to all his rivals here under Tom Marquand, but I believe he is up to it.
14:20 Newmarket – Fearby
This is a valuable sales race for juveniles over 5 furlongs. FEARBY will be hard to keep out the frame at least for Ed Bethell and Ryan Moore. Rated 104, the youngster has to give weight away to many of his rivals here, but his form is a long way in advance of those who get a few pounds.
I suspect the consistent son of Havana Gold will be well suited to a drop in trip off a strong pace and his third in the Mill Reef and second in the Molecomb Stakes to Armor shows a decent level of ability.
14:40 Ascot – Hukum
Now the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge over 1m 4f. I have no doubt HUKUM is the most talented horse in this field and even though he gives weight to some, he has to be the selection for the talented Owen Burrows and Jim Crowley.
The Shadwell inmate scored at York before taking the Geoffrey Freer Stakes in good style at Newbury two runs ago. Last time I was disappointed with his second to Hamish in the September Stakes at Kempton and it’s hard to blame the surface as he landed a novice at the track on his second start. That said, it might be his talent just got him home that day and maybe he’ll be better back on grass.
14:55 Newmarket – Saffron Beach
This is the big Group 1 race of the day, the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes over 1m for fillies and mares. Snow Lantern and Mother Earth clearly have every chance, but I want to bet on SAFFRON BEACH each-way here for William Buick and Jane Chapple-Hyam.
The 1,000 Guineas runner-up did this column a right favour when landing a significant gamble at Sandown last time and bolted up in the end. She’s had excuses for defeats this season and at the odds she is well worth a play.
15:15 Ascot – Glen Shiel
We have another Group 3 in the Bengough Stakes over 6 furlongs and it’s a tricky race! GLEN SHIEL has been desperate recently ,but there is no doubt he’s the one to beat if he can bring anything like his best form to the table.
Rain will help the Archie Watson runner, who earlier this term was a fine second to Dream of Dreams in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Since then, Glen Shiel has been miles behind in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and the Haydock Sprint. That said, if he’s going to bounce back, this is where he will do it.
15:35 Redcar – Vintage Clarets
We also have one from Redcar on ITV in the Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy over 6 furlongs. VINTAGE CLARETS might just be the one for Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan. The Coventry Stakes third was also a decent enough sixth in the Super Sprint at Newbury. Things haven’t been quite as good since, but this is a fair opportunity to get back to winning ways.
15:50 Ascot – River Nymph
This final race on the telly is a handicap over 7 furlongs. That said, it’s basically a conditions race rather than a handicap. Aratus has landed his last two races for this column and he could easily go in again but I’m afraid I’ll lose if he wins, as I’m with his stable companion RIVER NYMPH ridden by stable jockey Adam Kirby.
Winner of the Victoria Cup here at Ascot, River Nymph has since run well in Group 3 company at Haydock and a Listed race at Newbury. He stays well and this is a fine opportunity, so he is a decent each-way bet.
So best of luck and I’ll be back tomorrow for Prix de l’Arc day at Longchamp. You hear me Paddy?
