WHAT IS THE 1000 GUINEAS?
The best three-year-old fillies in the game will make their dash for glory in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. It’s a 1m sprint run, unsurprisingly, on the Rowley Mile at the famous racecourse. The 1000 Guineas was first held in 1814 – five years after the 2000 Guineas’ inception.
WHEN IS THE 1000 GUINEAS?
The 2021 running of the 1000 Guineas takes place at 3.40pm on Sunday May 2. Last year’s race was rescheduled for June due to the coronavirus pandemic and it was won by Love, who followed up with victory in the Oaks at Epsom Downs.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE 1000 GUINEAS?
The 1000 Guineas – like the 2000 Guineas – was given that title due to the original prize fund on offer.
A guinea was a coin used in Great Britain between the 17th and 19th centuries that contained approximately one-quarter of an ounce of gold sourced from the Guinea region in West Africa. It was worth one pound and five pence in decimalised currency (21 shillings for those fans of the pre-decimalisation era).
HOW MUCH PRIZE MONEY DOES THE 1000 GUINEAS WINNER GET?
The 1000 Guineas has an equal prize pot as the 2000 Guineas so a tidy total of £212,663 will be handed over to winning connections.
