When is the 2000 Guineas? 2021 date, start time and prize money for Newmarket Classic

The flat season's picking up pace.

It’s almost time for the biggest race of the flat season so far and Paddy Power News has everything you need to know about the 2000 Guineas.

WHAT IS THE 2000 GUINEAS?

The 2000 Guineas is the first of the five British Classics in flat racing. It’s a true test of speed to separate the great from the good in the thoroughbred three-year-old age group.

Newmarket plays host to the 2000 Guineas, with the race being run on the Rowley Mile over a distance of, you guessed it, 1m.

WHEN IS THE 2000 GUINEAS?

The 2021 renewal of the 2000 Guineas takes place at 3.40pm on Saturday May 1. Last year’s race was rescheduled for June due to the coronavirus pandemic and it was won by the Andrew Balding-trained Kameko.

WHY IS IT CALLED THE 2000 GUINEAS?

It’s time for a little history lesson. A guinea was a coin used in Great Britain between the 17th and 19th centuries that contained roughly one-quarter of an ounce of gold sourced from the Guinea region in West Africa.

A guinea was worth one pound and five pence in decimalised currency or 21 shillings for those with a penchant for the past.

It doesn’t take a genius to work out where we’re going here but to join the dots the 2000 Guineas is named after the original prize fund when the race was first held in 1809.

HOW MUCH PRIZE MONEY DOES THE 2000 GUINEAS WINNER EARN?

Don’t worry, the winning connections will get their prize money in pound sterling. A hefty sum of £212,663 will be handed over. Woof!
