17:15 Chelmsford – Third Kingdom (nap)
Third Kingdom has achieved a fair level of form in both starts to date, notably finishing a good third at Sandown last time, where he was beaten just three and a quarter lengths behind Etonian. That rival advertised the strength of that form when following up in the Solario Stakes, while runner-up One Ruler has also been successful since, going one place better in a strong maiden at the same venue.
By contrast, this is a race low on potential and Third Kingdom may not need to improve to get off the mark at the third attempt, representing the John Gosden yard that has an impressive 24% strike rate at Chelmsford in recent seasons.
20:20 Chelmsford Summit Fever – (next best)
Summit Fever has improved significantly with every start and was well on top at the finish when opening his account at Lingfield last time. Always travelling strongly at the head of affairs, he quickly put the race to bed when quickening over a furlong out, ultimately winning readily by a length and a half.
Everything about him (including his smart pedigree) suggests he’ll go on progressing for a while yet, so he is very much one to bear in mind on handicap debut, with an opening mark of 75 appealing as more than fair.
18:50 Chelmsford – Mr Scaramanga (each-way)
Mr Scaramanga was only sixth behind Royal Dynasty and Alnaseem at Lingfield last month, but he looks overpriced in relation to that pair as they meet again here, especially as he wasn’t seen to best effect given how the race developed.
While the winner made just about every yard of the running, Mr Scaramanga delivered his challenge from further back than ideal and could never land a blow, doing well under the circumstances to be beaten only three lengths. He certainly shaped as if back in form and looks well treated if building on that effort, now back on the same mark as when recording his last win at Epsom in July 2019.
