The Melbourne Cup is one of the biggest dates on the racing calendar – but who is the favourite to win the ‘race that stops the nation’?
The field of 24 runners and riders are set to go to post at 4am GMT (3pm local time) on Tuesday, November 2 with a bumper prize pot worth in excess of £4m up for grabs. You’ll find the very latest Melbourne Cup 2021 odds available via our betting widgets below.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Incentivise heads Paddy’s market after a convincing victory in last month’s Caulfield Cup. The unbeaten five-year-old is aiming to become just the 12th horse in history to double up in the Flemington feature.
There are just two European-based horses attempting to land Group 1 glory Down Under. Spanish Mission – trained by Andrew Balding – is prominent in the betting after passing a late veterinary check. He was last seen on track placing second behind Stradivarius in August’s thrilling Lonsdale Cup at York.
Ireland’s Twilight Payment claimed the top prize last year but has been lumbered with top weight as he attempts to defend his crown. Joseph O’Brien has admitted it’ll be tricky to win carrying 9st 2lb but the eight-year-old warmed up for the race with a decent second in September’s Irish St Leger.
Nathaniel colt Floating Artist has won twice in four starts since moving to Ciaron Maher & David Eustace’s yard in Australia, including a victory at Flemington in September.
Maher & Eustace also have Grand Promenade, who beat Tralee Rose in a Group 3 at the course last month, prominent in our market.
Meanwhile, UK and Irish Flat racing fans will recognise the name of Sir Lucan, who makes his first start for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott after being transferred from Aidan O’Brien’s yard. The three-year-old is at the bottom of the weights but did claim the Yeats Stakes (Listed) at Navan in May.
