There’s a really strong field in the Wells Fargo Championship and it’s well known as a place where Rory McIlroy has had a lot of success during his career. The tournament gets underway on Thursday and I have two main selections.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

My big pick is JUSTIN THOMAS. He finished joint-13th last week at the Valspar Championship and he led the field in strokes gained off the tee. What stopped him from finishing higher up the leaderboard there was his putting. He lost six and a half strokes putting against the field.

I’m not really too concerned with that. Looking at events over the last two years where he’s lost strokes putting, 80 per cent of the time he’s gained strokes the following week on the greens. Justin Thomas is my most likely winner this week. He can go the same as the Players Championship and go all the way.

My next pick is VIKTOR HOVLAND. He finished joint-third last week at the Valspar Championship. Like Thomas, his long game is in really good shape. He’s ranking in the top ten in terms of strokes gained off the tee as well as approach play.

This is his debut at Quail Hollow but looking at the course, it should really play to his strengths. It puts a real demand on your long game and there’s not many better at the moment than Hovland. Driving is the real component you need to excel in to succeed here and Hovland’s been gaining strokes in his last 14 events in a row.

He’ll be able to put himself into a good position on most holes there. He can put in a really solid performance.
