Sunday 3pm, 2022 World Cup Final: Argentina v France
TV: BBC, ITV, RTE
Our footballing Nostradamus is back once again to preview the big one – it’s the Qatar 2022 World Cup final. It’s taken a month to find our two contenders, but it turns out we could have just asked Thommo.
He correctly picked France and Argentina to make it to Sunday’s showpiece in a Paddy Power turbo-charged 33/1 punt.
THOMMO’S PRE-TOURNAMENT PREDICTION
PHIL THOMPSON’S WORLD CUP WINNERS
- Argentina & France To Make The Final – Won @ 33/1
- France To Win 2-0 (v Morocco) – Won @ 5/1
- Cody Gakpo (1st Goalscorer) v Qatar – Won @ 4/1
- Ivan Perisic (Anytime Goalscorer) v Japan – Won @ 3/1
- Netherlands & Argentina Double – Won @ 2/1
- England To Win & Kane To Score (v Senegal) – Won @ 7/4
Thommo’s not done there, though. Here’s his punts for France v Argentina. Take it away…
Lionel Messi is the best player I’ve ever seen and obviously I can go right back to Pele and Diego Maradona. The big debate about Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi is always on everybody’s mind. I’ve always liked Messi.
I like the way he behaves, there’s no histrionics with him, he gets brought down and gets back up and gets on with it. His goal tally has been sensational. So has Ronaldo’s, I’m not taking anything away from that. It’s just that Messi has always been more of my favourite and we’ve all taken to him a little bit more than Ronaldo.
But, looking at the game, it’s so hard to win back-to-back titles. This French team, without Paul Pogba, Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante and a few defenders as well, they’ve still found a way to win. I wish I was sitting here saying it was Argentina v England but I think France have always had that little bit more to get through these games.
Their front line of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud have been quite sensational. Griezmann, in that No.10 role, I think has had a sensational tournament.

Argentina, it’s Messi. I predicted before it started that this would be Messi’s tournament. He wants to get that ghost of Maradona off his shoulders, to be the main man and win the World Cup to complete his trophy cabinet.
Him and Julian Alvarez up front will cause France problems. I think there’s going to be goals in this. Don’t forget, Argentina lost the first game of the World Cup against Saudi Arabia after a 35-game unbeaten run. I think this is sensational this final, I did tip it, I did think it would come down to this, and I think it will be a great, great final. I’ll go with Argentina to Win and Both Teams to Score.
I think Messi will go on to win the Golden Boot. It’s still tight between him and Mbappe, they’ve both got five goals, but I think Messi will Score Anytime and go on to win it. I said I think there’ll be plenty of goals so I think there will be Over 3.5 Goals and if you have Argentina to win in there as well it will be a good price.
