Spain looked impressive against Slovakia in their final group stage game but it’s hard to read too much into it as they didn’t have much competition. Slovakia were very poor and Spain played the right team at the right time. They were the perfect opponent for Spain to get some confidence heading into the last 16.
I’m not sure about Spain at all and they’re obviously not the team of old who would dominate possession against any side. My issue is they overpass and allow teams to get men behind the ball. They no longer have the players to exploit teams once they have 10 men back. They don’t have that David Silva who can unlock defences.
They’ve looked average and they face a good Croatia side. Croatia are starting to come into the tournament and we saw a fantastic goal from Luka Modric against Scotland. They could be dark horses and we can’t forget they were in the World Cup final in 2018. They’ve got experience in big tournaments.

I think Croatia can turn over Spain and I’m going with a 2-1 win, with Modric scoring.
