Arsenal To Win
Arsenal’s season is in danger of petering out if they don’t get a result this weekend. The Gunners will arrive at Molineux on the back of a Champions League exit to Bayern Munich and a home defeat by Aston Villa, two matches in which they drew a blank.
A win here would provide a sizeable boost, as it would take Arsenal to the top of the table and put pressure on Liverpool who travel to Fulham on Sunday. With Manchester City in FA Cup action this weekend and the Gunners also hosting Chelsea before the defending champions next play in the league, Mikel Arteta’s side have a chance to pressure City too.
A trip to face a team who are snugly safe in mid table at this time of the season isn’t a bad thing. Wolves have bloodied the noses of the big boys at home in 2023/24 though.
Having played five games against both sets, Gary O’Neil’s side almost have as many points at Molineux against the top six teams (eight) as the bottom six (10). They beat City and Tottenham 2-1, held Aston Villa and Newcastle to draws and led Liverpool into the second half before the Reds fought back.
While Wolves were deservedly beaten at the Emirates in the reverse of this fixture, the score was only 2-1 and they did have a couple of big chances. With two draws and three defeats from their last five matches in all competitions, is this the sort of game in which their form turns when they have nothing much to play for though? It feels unlikely.
Having played in Germany on Wednesday, the Gunners will be tired here. But they have the most away points of any team in the division and have only failed to win twice against sides starting this weekend in the bottom half of the table, as Wolves do. Assuming they don’t leave their legs in Munich, Arsenal to win.
Both Teams to Score: No
Arteta’s boys are so good on the road because they give up very few chances. Arsenal have won 10 league games away from home this term and eight of them have been secured while keeping a clean sheet.
This includes the six victories they have earned at teams who start the weekend between eight and 16th, with Wolves nestled among them in 11th place. The Gunners have also won to nil in their last two games at Molineux, and four of the last six.
Arsenal’s last seven away matches have seen at least one team fail to score, so when asked if Both Teams will Score here, just say no.
Leandro Trossard To Score Anytime
The Gunners’ goals have dried up a touch at the worst possible time, with Arsenal failing to score in their last two matches and three of the previous six. As two of those were away to Bayern and Manchester City, that’s fair enough, but the goals aren’t flowing as freely as they were earlier in the year.
Two of the last three netted by Arteta’s boys were tucked away by Leandro Trossard. While he had a bad miss against Aston Villa last weekend, the Belgian only got a cameo in Munich so should start here.
Nobody in the squad has more non-penalty goals on the road in the league this season either. Trossard to Score Anytime, you know it makes sense.
Under 9.5 Corners
The previous meeting of these teams was one of just nine Premier League matches in 2023/24 which saw no more than four corners. While this game may not feature so few, there have only been 10 and eight in the last two meetings at Molineux in which the visitors didn’t receive a red card or two.
As eight of Wolves’ 15 home games this season saw fewer than 10, and these games include the visits of Liverpool and City, an Under 9.5 Corners selection looks reasonable.
Under 3.5 Cards
When these teams clash in the west Midlands, sparks and cards tend to fly. The last four Molineux meetings have all seen at least five yellows.
Referee Paul Tierney may keep a lid on things though. Among the 21 referees who’ve taken charge of at least four Premier League matches this season, only Sam Barrott has shown fewer than four cards in a greater proportion of their games. While the last two matches between these teams took place at the Emirates, there were only three bookings in total. It makes sense to pick Under 3.5 Cards here.
