Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard admitted last night’s VAR decision to rule out Danny Ings’ goal at Old Trafford was probably the worst he’s seen since Sheffield United were denied by a goal-line technology error in 2020… against Aston Villa.
The 41-year-old questioned why three hours were needed by the VAR to disallow Ings’ strike in Aston Villa’s third-round FA Cup exit at Manchester United.
‘Despite the body-check on Cavani, the offside and possible handball – we can feel pretty hard done by with that decision’, the former Rangers boss told Paddy Power News.
‘It’s cost us in the end. But not as much as the Sheffield United Hawk-Eye blunder cost Bournemouth and Watford’.
Gerrard was referring to the incident when a Sheffield United free-kick was carried over the line by Villa keeper Orjan Nyland but wasn’t spotted by the malfunctioning goal-line technology.
The game finished 0-0 and Villa survived relegation by a single point, with Bournemouth and Watford both condemned to the Championship.
‘I spoke with some of the lads who were playing that day and the ref told them he wasn’t sure if the whole goalkeeper had crossed the line. So he couldn’t give it’, added the ex-Liverpool midfielder.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have asked the Premier League to postpone this weekend’s clash with Villa following a Covid outbreak at Stockley Park.
‘I am told there have been a number of positive cases in the VAR hub which would restrict the number of officials we have at our disposal’, United boss Ralph Rangnick told Paddy Power News.
‘We have offered them the services of some people associated with the club who could take over VAR duties for the day’.
‘This includes: Sir Alex Ferguson, Paul Scholes, Donny van de Beek, Fred the Red and the ‘give it Giggsy’ guy off YouTube’, revealed the German.
