Paddy ambassadors Phil Thompson and Emmanuel Petit have joined forces with PPTV to give you your ultimate pre-match preview complete with their best bets. First up is Switzerland v Spain in their quarter final on Friday evening at 5pm.
Switzerland shocked the favourites, France, on penalties in the last 16 while Spain needed extra time to get past Croatia 5-3. Could we be in line for another upset here? Here’s Thommo and Emmanuel with their thoughts.
It’s hard to play against Switzerland, you know? They’ve improved a lot over the last few years and the look very strong physically against us. They were ready to fight, they have two or three players on every ball all the time.
They looked very mature tactically. They have this system with 3-4-1-2. They’re used to it, they’ve been playing like this for years and years now. I believe that what they’ve done against France put a lot of confidence and pride in the players’ minds.
It’s a big, big step for them but in some way I believe that they made history against us and that could be their final in their heads. Maybe they will start the game the same way they started against us which was that they had nothing to lose.
Friday 5pm: Switzerland v Spain ITV and ITV Hub
Spain have to beat Switzerland and I believe that they have the power in terms of moving the ball and the fact that they’ve scored so many goals in the last few games, it’s completely different with what we have seen at the beginning of the Euros for them.
We were talking about, ok it’s good to have possession of the ball but you still have to score goals. The fact that they are scoring so many goals, they’ve shown good team spirit as well. Mentally they looked strong against Croatia.
I believe that it will be a very difficult task for Switzerland to repeat what they did against France, they used do much energy against us. I predict Spain will win. It will be a difficult task for them but Spain will go through.
Thommo
It’s the same for Spain as it is with England. They’ve got to be right, they’ve got to have it mentally. They’re overwhelming favourites and that is the big thing in the betting markets. Everybody’s going to be lumping on them and I do think Spain will Win.
Switzerland, there was something about them, a fight that normally you don’t associate with Swiss sides. They’ve got the likes of Haris Seferovic up front. He’s a handful, he can cause problems as we saw against France.
Spain can be a little bit uncomfortable when the ball’s in the box but I can’t see past Spain. I do think Both Teams will Score. I don’t think Spain will get a clean sheet.
At times they do look a big venerable Spain, but they’ve found the goal-scoring in these last two games. 10 goals, I can’t really see Spain losing this. I’m going for Spain to Win 3-1 and Alvaro Morata to Score Anytime. He looked a bit more confident towards the end of his last game and I just fancy him to score.
